Your Single Valentine

The dreaded day for singles is fast approaching. Touted as the most romantic day of the year, many singles can become depressed by all the hype that is generated because they don't have a partner. It's hard to watch all the candy and flowers being delivered, not to mention the engagements that happen on this day.

So, what are you supposed to do if you are in this situation?

Don't hate on the day. Think of it as "Single's Awareness Day". Yes, the day is going to remind you of your status, but you really don't have to be sad and depressed on this day. Valentine's day is a day of love and affection. It doesn't have to be about being in a relationship. You can express your affections to the ones you love on this day in so many ways.

Think about it! I bet you can come up with other people you know that are single and don't have anyone to share the day with and what better way to celebrate the day of love then to show them you were thinking of them.

Ideas for the Single Valentine's Day

    * First and foremost, you have got to take care of yourself. Love yourself to the extreme this holiday. Buy yourself flowers, a cute little stuffed animal, a new teddy, have your nails done, or head out and visit a spa for a relaxing massage.

    * Get together with friends and have a dinner and a movie night. You can go out to do this or do it on the cheap by inviting your friends over. Ask that they bring a dish that they love and you supply the drinks and decor. Pick up a cute, light-hearted movie and you'll be set for the night.
    * Give of yourself. Think of all the older men and women that are alone on this day. Visit your local retirement home and see what you can do to bring a little Valentine's cheer to their day.
    * Thank your loved ones on this day. Go out of your way to send a special thank-you to your parents, friends, or children.
    * Get that positive energy flowing. Think about all that life has given you and relish in those blessings.
    * If you are dead set on a relationship, create a plan. Read up on how to have the best relationship out there and then when that man or woman pops into your life, you'll be prepared to embrace it.

Keep in mind...

Valentine's Day is to be celebrated for what it truly stands for and not for all the hype that goes into selling roses, jewelry, and the like. Stand tall and proud in the things you have accomplished in your life. Don't get the SAD blues just because you don't have a significant other.

What's going on?

Over at Becky Boo's Bowtique, we have a multi-vendor auction going on until the 25th of January. This includes items from our own shop, as well as several other shops. Two of the shops are repeats with us and the others are new, so please stop by and show them some love by placing bids on any of the items that are up for grabs.

Now over at Linda's Finds on Webstore, this weekend only we have a 25% off sale going on. This sale will only last until the 22nd of January so hurry on over there because you don't want to miss out on these great deals.

We have been busy gathering new supplies and working on new selections for the stores. I'm still debating on whether or not to do custom ordering. If I do that, I'll have to get an album together of fabrics and patterns that customers can choose from for their items. It is a tough decision to make as I like to be really creative and mix different fabrics, lol.

I just came off jury duty and that was an experience, let me tell you. I understand now how some can be found not guilty when it is so obvious that they were guilty in the first place. Other than that, I'm still looking for a full time job, Becky is working now full time, and shopping, shopping, shopping, lol. We want to make sure we have a full line of items for you to choose from as you shop with us of the most current, up-to-date materials and patterns that are available.

Grrr....Facebook and their changes

I don't know what Facebook did when they made their changes, but we have had less than stellar views on our fan page since around the end of October. In an effort to combat this there are so many pages doing the whole "do you see me now" thing that it is rather irritating.

Becky Boo's Bowtique is still there. We just don't like to shove ourselves down everyone's throat all the time. For me it's like going to a car lot and being jumped on as soon as you open your door to get out and look. However, we have made some changes with the postal service increasing their fees ours went up as well. New items are being added to the Bellia's Creations album as I get them finished and as soon as Becky gets her supplies in the 2012 bow album will start filling up, too.

The outfit here is listed at both the Facebook page and over at Linda's Finds on webstore. One important fact here and why you want to shop the Facebook page is for the FREE shipping. Webstore items have an additional charge for shipping on them. Could I have done free shipping at webstore? Yes, but with the cost of all my supplies going up and in the interest of offering up deals, I saw it as one way to encourage more shopping at Becky Boo's Bowtique as opposed to Webstore. Not all the items on Webstore though can be found at Becky Boo's. Only the clothing items that are the start of a line of childrens wear that I am creating will be double listed. This means you want to check out both.

More on National Soup Month

I have to tell ya, since having open heart surgery last year these cold winter months are even more my least favorite. I do, however, love warm foods during this time of year and national soup month is a great time to experiment to see what you like. I did a post a couple days back called January is National Soup Month and shared some of my favorite recipes. I thought I would add to that thought and share a little something different.

Experimenting in the Kitchen

I've always cooked fairly traditionally, followed the recipe, etc. Since my surgery I have gotten rather creative. Just last night, I created an old soup, but in an entirely different way.

My bones really ache now, especially when it's cold outside. Tonight, I wanted soup, but the stock I usually keep wasn't available, so here is what I did: I had a jar of spaghetti sauce on hand, I'd already thawed the ground beef, and I've got some frozen butter peas stashed in the freezer, but would it work?

Well, you get the ingredients that follow and judge for yourself:

One jar of spaghetti sauce, 1 lb. ground beef (browned, drained, and rinsed), 1 pkg. butter peas, 2 cubes beef bullion, 1 1/2 Tbsp. dried onion flakes, 1 Tbsp. Italian seasoning, 1/2 Tbsp. garlic powder, and 1/2 Tbsp. creole seasoning.

Cook the butter peas in 2 quarts water, 1 Tbsp. Oil, and 1 Tbsp. salt, until tender.

While the butter peas are cooking, start 2 cups of water heating. Add in the beef bullion cubes, dried onion flakes, Italian seasoning, garlic powder, and creole seasoning. Let all this simmer until the cubes are dissolved.

As this simmers, brown your ground beef. When it is done, drain and rinse it.

When the butter peas are done, drain and rinse them, as well. Put the spaghetti sauce in a dutch oven or larger pot. Add your bullion mixture; fill the spaghetti jar with water twice and add it in, then add your meat and butter peas. Let simmer on low for about an hour. Serve it up with some homemade cornbread.

Now, onto another love of mine:

The no-cook pasta sauce! This is where the something different comes in. I do a lot of chicken dishes around here and you really get tired of having it the same old way, so I went looking for some ideas:

   1. Roasted Red Pepper Sauce--I like it a little on the spicy side. Take a jar of roasted red peppers and drain them. Once you do this put the peppers in the blender, add 1/4 C olive oil, some fresh basil, 1 peeled clove of garlic, and a pinch of sugar. Puree it to a smooth consistency and serve over sauteed chicken or cheese filled ravioli.
   2. Nicoise--Cook shell pasta and add in cut green beans during the last few minutes. Toss the hot drained pasta mixture with olive oil, lemon juice, chopped and pitted Kalamata olives, a can of drained tuna or chicken, throw in a pinch of oregano, and salt and pepper to your taste.
   3. Ricotta, Peas, and Walnuts--Cook up some penne pasta and during the last few minutes throw in some frozen peas and pearl onions. Toss drained mixture with a bit of Parmesan, butter, salt and pepper to taste, and a pinch of ground nutmeg. Serve by topping with Ricotta cheese and chopped walnuts or pecans.
   4. Bruschetta--Chop up some plum tomatoes very finely, along with 1/2 of a small red onion. Mix this with some olive oil, balsamic vinegar, fresh basil (chopped), salt, and red pepper flakes to taste. Toss with hot cooked pasta and grated Parmesan. You can add a grilled chicken breast chopped up in this, as well.

Embracing 2012

Last night, we rang in the New Year of 2012. No matter how you celebrated, it is time to embrace the new year.

For us, at Becky Boo's Bowtique, we have made a few changes that we hope you will like.

We have instituted a Bow of the Month club.
We have created a Valentine's Day album.
We have changed the Bellia's Creations album.

These are only minor changes and you can see them all by visiting our Facebook fan page by clicking on the link above. The other thing we have done in the past month is to re-open the Linda's Finds shop on webstore (the link is in the sidebar). This is where you will find double posting of our items as well as the supplies we have on hand for sale.

We learned a lot these past 5 months on Facebook and continue to grow and change.

It is our sincere wish to make a success out of this business. We also hope that everyone of our fans enjoys their experience while shopping with us.

Here's to a fabulous 2012!!!

January is National Soup Month

In honor of National Soup Month which is January, I thought I would share three of my favorite recipes with you.

Just to give you a little history: Soup has been around since back in 600 B. C. It seems that the Greeks sold it and it included beans and lentils along with a tasty broth. The word soup though has been around for a while and is derived from the word sop. Many used to sop of broth with a piece of crusty bread and for those that is where soup came from.

No matter where it came from, it is one of the best comfort foods around. When you are cold and tired, a warm bowl of chowder can really hit the spot. Many use the tried and true chicken noodle soup to help when they are ailing. Chili started out as a much thinner soup to begin with and now we have chili cook-offs around the nation. It really is one of my favorite things during the cold winter months.

So, let's get to the recipes, shall we?

Vegetable Cheese Soup

This soup offers up a creamy, rich consistency that is simple to prepare.

You will need:

1 pkg (16 oz) frozen broccoli, cauliflower, and carrot mix

2 Cans (16 oz) fat-free reduced sodium chicken broth

3/4 lb Velveeta cheese cut up into squares

To Prepare:

Place your vegetables and broth in a large saucepan and cover. Bring this to a boil over medium heat. Reduce the heat to low and simmer until the vegetables are tender.

Mash vegetables with a potato masher to desired consistency.

Stir in the cheese and cook about 5 minutes or until the cheese is melted.

Serve with a warm crusty bread of your choice.

Taco Soup

Taco soup is a warm soup that is perfect for those days when you need something fast.

What you will need:

1 lb extra lean ground beef or turkey

1 onion, chopped

3 cans (15 1/2 oz each) chili beans, undrained

1 can (14 1/2 oz) whole tomato, undrained

1 can (14 1/2 oz) kernel corn, undrained

1 can (8 oz) tomato sauce

1 pkg (1 1/4 oz) taco seasoning mix

1 1/2 C water

1 1/2 C shredded cheddar cheese for topping

How to prepare:

Brown the ground beef or turkey in a large skillet and drain.

Add all the remaining ingredients except the cheese. Break up the tomatoes. Bring this to a boil and then turn down on low heat and let simmer for about 5 min.

To serve:

Top with cheese and sour cream if desired. Add some corn muffins as an accompaniment.

Chicken Tortilla Soup (You can see what this looks like in the beginning picture, it's my favorite)

This soup takes a bit more planning so give it a go on a cold winter day while you watch your favorite football team. By the time they win, you can sit down to a warm and spicy soup that is sure to please.

What you will need:

8 C chicken broth

3 C bite sized or chopped chicken pieces

1 pkg (16 oz) frozen kernel corn

1 can (15 oz) diced tomato, undrained

1 can (5 oz) diced green chilis

1 1/2 Tbsp chili powder

1 onion, chopped

Vegetable oil

4 (6 inch) flour tortilla's cut into narrow strips

1 C Mexican shredded cheese

1 (8 oz) container of sour cream

How to prepare:

Combine all ingredients except oil, tortilla, cheese, and sour cream in a large dutch oven. Heat over med heat until vegetables are tender. Usually about one good hour. Transfer to a crock pot to keep warm while you make the tortilla strips.

To prepare the tortilla strips, cut them narrow and then heat your oil. Once the oil is hot start adding the tortilla strips and cook until golden brown. Drain on a paper towel lined plate and salt to taste.

To Serve: Ladle the soup into the bowl of your choice, top with a dollop of sour cream, sprinkle with shredded cheese, and fried tortilla strips.

You can make a nice salad to accompany this great spicy soup.

It is my sincere hope that we all have a blessed and warm beginning to the new year. Let's start it off by celebrating National Soup Month and enjoying some great homemade soups.

Out with the Old, In with the New

We at Becky Boo's Bowtique have decided since Facebook has made so many changes to re-open Linda's Finds on Webstore.

This does not mean we will be leaving Facebook any time soon. All it means is that we will have two venues for selling our handmade items and destash items. Double listing them as it were.

You can get to any of our items by clicking on the business card here in this blog, the Facebook box to the right, and now the Webstore link to the right, as well.

We know that Webstore is still very unfamiliar with a lot of people, so we wanted to take this opportunity to tell you a little bit about it. As a vendor, it is a very good place to sell. They take no fees at this time to use their site unlike a certain larger site does. What does this mean? It means, as a vendor you keep your profits with the exception of the small fee paypal takes out to transact if you choose to use them.

As a buyer, you can be guaranteed to feel safe and secure while you shop on Webstore. Most of the vendors become certified paypal transactors. This gives everyone a certain peace of mind when shopping online. We can't tell you the number of transactions that have gone awry and we had no real recourse, but at Webstore you can be assured that the vendor you choose is legit. There is feedback you can read to help you make a decision, as well as a little icon on the vendors store page that says they are certified.

Rest assured we are not leaving Facebook any time soon. We just need a little extra exposure and feel going forward into the new year that this is a good fit for us. Becky is working now and I am maintaining most of the workings of the Facebook page, as well as the groups for destashing, and I will be running the Webstore page too.

What can you expect to see on the Webstore site? It will be a combination of older merchandise we have for sale, as well as things that we are trying to unclutter from our homes. Lots of the supplies we had listed will be on there, too.

We hope you will join Webstore and shop both our sites. In the coming new year, you can expect the Facebook page to become more boutique like in what we have to offer. Old merchandise like Halloween bows etc. will find a new home on the Webstore page and eventually be phased out of Facebook as we bring in new merchandise for your shopping pleasure.

A little venting about shipping!!

A lot of ribbon, right? Yes, it is over 100 yards of ribbon. I found a couple of amazing deals by sellers and got this for the amazing bow maker of the family my daughter.

Don't you just love how it is all neat and tidy? Yeppers, again that was me. When I got the two shipments, they were a tangled mess of ribbon. You couldn't tell what was what honestly. Not to mention one of the lots was a nightmare in receiving since the lady didn't charge enough for the shipping and then didn't bother to try to contact me to tell me she hadn't shipped it yet. I had to open a dispute on Paypal just to find out where the dang ribbon was before I got that answer.

So, the title of "A little venting about shipping" is appropriate here. I as a business owner like to make sure my items are received in a good condition. Now, I have had issues where things have gotten broken, things got crushed, etc, but never in my life have I seen such a tangled mess as the way these ribbons arrived.

The first one came fairly neat, but nothing like what you see in the picture. The second was just a mess. The ad had said over a hundred yards, honestly though you couldn't prove it by me with the way I received it. I spent a few hours this afternoon going through the lot and re-wrapping it into these little bundles. What a difference it can make to your buyer to not have to spend that time.

Little tricks of the trade in shipping that make all the difference in the world is what will have people coming back to shop time and time again. That old adage that used to be on VCR tapes "Please be kind, rewind" keeps running through my head.

Okay, done rant. All in all, I'm very pleased with the ribbon. Most of it will be put to good use in Becky's hair bow business and what isn't can either be re-sold or donated to someone who can use it. Definitely money well spent even though there were hassles.

Being a Business Owner on Facebook

As business owners on Facebook, we at Becky Boo's Bowtique have seen the countless posts to like this page if you see this post because of all the Facebook changes that have occurred. It is true that there have been changes but those changes are not going to be affected by asking your fans to like the page.

Business Among Moms wrote a very fascinating blog on this whole issue and what will or won't affect the way your page is seen or is not seen by your fans.

As most of us have done, we have garnered fans by using liking ladders, inviting our friends, or tagging ourselves on pages. These are all ways to get fans, but the thing that Business Among Moms points out is that the algorithm is what changed back in Sept. With that change the people who just liked the page for the sake of liking it no longer see your news feed posts which in turn could be a good thing.

Over the past few weeks we have noticed a drop in participation and were wondering why, then came the drop in fans and again it had us scratching our heads. It isn't like we really changed anything. However, after reading the post by Business Among Moms, it has become clear that to survive in the world of Facebook business we must be engaging as well as having a good mix of advertising to go along with it.

We started today, well kind of yesterday really with the Question of the Day and we have had a good bit of interaction. In the end, what you do or don't do with your page will make you or break you and we would like to survive. We love doing what we do and having all the fans that we have. Honestly, though for those of you starting out with a business fan page, my suggestion is to skip the ladders and build a page that is engaging from the get go with a few ads and deals sprinkled in here and there. Get to know your customers, the ones who are truly buying from you by asking pertinent questions about there likes and dislikes. Engage them as you would if you were hosting a party that you want to be a huge success.

Pine Cone Crafts

Pine cone craft projects offer the crafter a plethora of different options in creating for a multitude of holidays. From Christmas crafts to Easter and beyond, you can use these versatile natural elements to add to your holiday decorations or for fun crafts to do with the kids. All it takes is a little know-how on how to treat the pine cone before beginning the craft project so it will last for years to come.

Pine Cone Preparation

The first thing you need to do is gather the pine cones from the yard. You can use an old trash can for this part of the project, gathering as many as the can will hold. Next, you will want to soak the pine cones in warm water to cleanse them. Leave them in the water overnight to remove pine sap and any critters that might be lodged deep inside the cone. Remove them from the water and let them air dry for two or three days in the sun.

Now that you have your prepared pinecones, you can store them in an airtight container until you are ready to begin your craft projects. What craft to begin with will be on your mind. It would be recommended that if you have a holiday approaching to start with that one.

Fall Pine Cone Crafts (Yes, this has pretty much come and gone but I wrote this a while ago just didn't get it posted to the blog, lol)

Labor day is fast approaching and a good way to get the kids involved in what this holiday actually means is to create a collage of working people with the pine cones. How do you do this? Take the pine cones and detach the petals and paint them in various differing shades. On a large piece of poster board or a salvaged piece of cardboard, draw a worker. Let the kids fill in the body, face, etc with the different painted petals and carry on a conversation with them about the upcoming holiday.

For the fall equinox, you could make baskets to place around the home as decoration. Bird feeders are also a good idea to create during this time, as food supplies will start to diminish for them. Make a bonfire on Halloween and throw in some pine cones as a fire starter. They will crackle and pop and the kids will get a thrill out of seeing the shooting sparks from them.

Holiday Pine Cone Crafts

Thanksgiving is a great holiday to do pine cone craft projects. You can glue the petals to a predrawn turkey or create a turkey out of the whole pine cone by adding pipe cleaners for the feet and feathers for the tail.

At Christmas, you can use the pine cones in a multitude of different craft projects. Use an old wire coat hanger as a base and create a wreath for your front door by attaching the pine cones to the wire with glue. Mix in nuts gathered from the yard and berries. You can add them as a natural decoration to your tree by adding a ribbon to them, tied in a bow with a loop to hang on the tree. Make a Christmas tree out of them by starting with a wire coat hanger as the base. Top with pine cones of similar size turned on their sides and glued to the coat hanger. Keep stacking and gluing new pine cones to your tree to form an upside down cone. Spray paint with green paint, add gum drops or other things to the tree for decorations and use as a centerpiece for your dining table.

Other Holiday Pine Cone Crafts

On Valentine's Day, paint the petals red and create unique cards for your loved ones by glueing the petals to the outside of the card.

When Easter comes around, you can paint the pine cones pastel colors and hang them from trees out of doors to create a natural egg tree. You can also change out the Christmas wreath with these pastel pine cones to create a spring wreath for your door.

Mix the petals in with other dried flower petals to create your own potpourri. Add the scented oil of your choice and place around your home.

When you...

are doing any craft project, if you can add a natural element to it, it will be all the more pleasing to you in the end. Think outside the box and see what else you can come up with to use these great natural elements for in your pine cone craft projects.

On-Line Auctions

Recently, we at Becky Boo's Bowtique held a charity auction. We researched how other stores were doing this on Facebook and got some advice from a good friend who does it for a living before we set it up with all the rules and opened the auction for bidding. The outcome was fairly decent as most of the items ended up being bid on, but the fall out afterward with the number of people who bailed on it was a dismal affair. In the end, we learned a lot about this type of event though and have decided not to do it quite the same if at all next year.

So, what exactly is an on-line auction on Facebook? Ours happened to be one where people ~~ other vendors ~~ donated items to the cause. These items were listed with a starting bid, how the increments to increase it should be made, and what the shipping charges would be. The only difference in this is that we asked the vendors to donate the item exclusively to us and we would handle everything. In most cases when a shop on Facebook opens an auction it is either their items exclusively or it is a multi-vendor auction. The vendors set everything up and the bidders are asked to follow specific rules.

Now, here is the thing. If you go in a place a bid, it is just like going to a live auction and if you are the high bidder you are in agreement that you will follow through on the purchase of the item. In a sense, it is a binding contract. If you can't pay, or something comes up that you can't close out by the deadline, all it takes in most cases is a little communication with the vendor who listed the item. Everyone I know is willing to work with the customer in this sense.

However, if you ignore the vendors repeated attempts to contact you about the sale, you are only setting yourself up to look like a deadbeat purchaser. In the world of social marketing, this can be a killer for you the purchaser as the word that you didn't pay, didn't communicate, and didn't follow through gets around like a wildfire in Texas. This brings us to another point.

While the vendors on Facebook don't have a brick and mortar store, in reality we are no different than one. Finances, lifestyles etc. are the reason we chose to open an on-line venue for your shopping convenience. You can't go into a store like say Wal-mart and get an item off the shelf, take it to the register and say I'll pay you for this next week and expect to walk out. The same is true of the on-line vendor.

When you make a deal to purchase an item and it is invoiced to you, you have entered into a binding contract with that vendor. It creates a lot of behind the scenes hassle if you then don't follow through and pay for the item you agreed to purchase. We all understand the economy is bad and life happens. Talk to us and work something out. We definitely don't want to bite the hand that feeds us and most of us like I said are very understanding and flexible.

Another point I would like to make here is with the games, deals, incentives, etc. that many of these vendors offer up for you their customers. If you can't pay, don't play. It is as simple as that. By playing and becoming the winner and then bailing because you had no way of paying for the item, you are taking the fun out of it for the ones who really do what the item.

So, long story short, if you play, make sure you pay. If you buy and something happens, make sure you contact the vendor. Communication is key!

Sunday saw the Think Pink Charity Bidding Event come to a close at Becky Boo's Bowtique. While we were a bit disappointed at the outcome we still raised a fair amount for the Susan G Komen for the Cure foundation and once all the invoices have been paid and everything tallied, the final donation will be off to the foundation.

The disheartening thing for us was this was a charity event. Bidders came in and jacked up the price on several items and then those bidders failed to follow through and make good on their bids. This made it impossible for others to bid on the items and thus they lost out on some wonderful items that we had listed. We've tossed around the idea of doing some mini-auctions with these items, but are still undecided which way to go with it. So, keep your eyes peeled, you never know what we might have in store.

Another thing we are over and done with is the addition of the new store Bellia's Retail Closet. Over the weekend, we moved all the craft supply items back to its own album on Becky Boo's Bowtique. This album is chock full of supplies for the crafter at reasonable prices based on prices we have researched. Come on over and check out this new album and see what we might have that you need.

Moving ever forward, every month we will be offering up an auction event from here on out. This coming month of November is the Holiday Craft Bazaar Event. We are hosting only handcrafted items in this one.

Great vendors have already started signing up and it is sure to be a huge success for all. We want people to buy locally from the stay at home crafter this year. The economy is bad all the way around, but this is our way of helping out.

You won't want to miss out on the deals you can get starting Nov. 1 and running until Nov. 15. Just be sure to follow through with your bid and purchase the item(s) if you happen to win.

Next, let's talk about a new vendor, well new to me, that my daughter and co-owner turned me on to this week. SassyKat Creations! First off, who can go wrong with that adorable logo picture? Yes, I'm a sucker for anything cat. However, once you get into her shop, you will find an explosion of items that are uncommon in the Facebook world of shopping fan pages. Messages in a Bottle, Feather Hair Extensions, a Resale album stuffed full of great deals, and oh so much more.

To the right, you will find two of the things I'm adding to my personal wardrobe this year. I've been wanting a hair extension to wear with an outfit for the Ren Fest here in GA for a while and found exactly what I was looking for at a reasonable price at SassyKat Creations.

Then last night, she hosted a round of Bingo and I won a 50% off coupon and selected earrings to match the hair piece. Again, the selections at this page are phenomenal and if you can't find exactly what you are looking for, be sure to ask. I wasn't sure the feathers could be made into earrings. I asked and look at those awesome beauties.

Facebook makes a lot of changes and while they can be frustrating, for me it is still the one place that we at Becky Boo's Bowtique have had the most success in running our handcrafted business work. We've enjoyed getting to know the other vendors and have formed some very close friendships in the process.

There is just one more little shout out I would like to give in the New and Different area. I found Promote Your Handmade Products page yesterday and the ladies over there are very nice. I was welcomed by Terri and love the concept of having a place to promote what we do ~~ make all our products by hand.

A Little Bit of Promo

As you all know, my daughter and I run Becky Boo's Bowtique together. We have put together in one location all the items that we make and have some great things going on over there.

First off is the Rockin 1000 Fan Celebration that ends this Wednesday the 19th of October.

Secondly, the Think Pink Charity Bidding Event will end on the 23rd of October. That means you only have 6 days to get your bids in and help out in raising money for the Susan G Komen for the Cure foundation. Don't let some of the high bids scare you off. There are still plenty of items for everyone to bid on in all price ranges.

And thirdly, Bellia's Retail Closet has been re-opened. We thought long and hard about how best to use this page and since we have so many vendor friends and fans an idea was born.

Here's a Story

We've all heard the theme from the Brady Bunch. I grew up on this little sitcom way back in the day, but this isn't about the Brady Bunch. Nope this is a riveting tale of adversity.

The Think Pink Charity Bidding Event was created by my daughter. She is the one I'm writing about today. Even though life is not going her way and hasn't been for a while, back in July on her birthday she signed up for a donation challenge with the Susan G Komen Foundation.

At that time, her and what I consider my son-in-law had lost their house and were in financial collapse. Yet, she wanted to give back. This particular charity is dear to her. I personally had my own scare with it that thankfully turned out fine. We have family members who have had their own scares with this disease. Right now we have one who is battling a different form of cancer. So, even though she had little money, she signed up for the challenge.

We over at Becky Boo's Bowtique got to thinking about this and the fact that October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and she put together this the Think Pink Charity Bidding Event. We were fortunate to get some of the vendors on Facebook to donate items to the charity and since its inaugural kick off on Sept. 23rd we have raised over $500 dollars that will go to the Susan G Komen Foundation.

Yes, she is playful and hopeful that things are turning around for her and my son-in-law, but to me she is the epitome of hope. Hope for a bright future where this disease does not claim a life, where there aren't over 1,700 men and women diagnosed with it every month, and where giving takes place no matter what your present circumstances are at the moment.

Home Sewn Gifts for Mom

Some things in life never change. Moms love handmade gifts from their children. Seriously, you know your mom was happy when she displayed your artwork on the fridge door or gave your card the place of honor in the center of the mantel. Over the years, she has thrilled at the handmade efforts of her little ones and today is no different.

If you are a person who likes to create using your sewing talents, the items you will find here should set you up for creating some wonderful easy home sewn gifts for mom.

Small Home Sewn Gifts for Mom

Sachets - You need two pieces of 4 inch by 4 inch square material for a basic sachet. Lay the two pieces together with right sides facing and sew all the edges together leaving a small 2 inch opening in one side. Trim your corners and seams, turn and fill with potpourri. Stitch the opening closed either by hand or machine.

You can really dress these little sachets up by adding any number of embellishments such as lace or beads. Another way to make a creative impact is to cut out different shapes and give a boxed set to mom.

Bookmarks - In order to create these you will need two pieces of 4 inch by two inch material, 12 inches of flat lace trim and a small piece of iron-on fusible interfacing.

    * Cut your material and one piece of interfacing
    * Apply interfacing to fabric on the wrong side
    * Lay your lace around the other piece of fabric facing to the inside. Place your interfaced fabric on top of this    right side down and pin in place
    * Sew the two together all the way around leaving a one inch opening for turning.
    * Trim your seams and turn
    * Press flat with fabric turned under at opening
    * Top stitch close to the edge all the way around

Medium Home Sewn Gifts for Mom

You can find patterns for just about anything these days from accessories and purse ensembles to table linens and chair covers. The thing to do to help you decide what to make mom is think about recent shopping trips with her or conversations. Did she look at an item and then kept returning to it but didn't purchase it? This is a big clue. All you need to do is find a pattern fro the same item.

These are considered medium because they do require you to purchase a specific pattern and require a bit of extra time to assemble.

Large Home Sewn Gifts for Mom

Memory quilts take a bit more time to assemble and are usually on a much larger scale than the previous items. However, they make a great gift for mom. The thing you need is to find items from you and your siblings (if you have any) childhood. You can scan pictures onto iron-on transfers to add to the quilt. Be sure to get all the grandchildren and great-grandchildren involved by having them make their own special squares that will be included in the finished design.

Awareness Ribbons

Awareness of different causes was brought to our attention back in the seventies. Tie a Yellow Ribbon by Tony Orlando and Dawn inspired the wife of a hostage held in Iran to do just what the song said in hopes that her husband would soon be returned to her.

The current design is a bit different but the meaning behind it is still the same. We first saw this design on television as many of us watched the Tony Awards in the 1990's. Actor, Jeremy Irons, had one of the newly designed AID's Awareness Ribbons pinned to his lapel during the show. From that moment forward, the symbol we recognize today as an Awareness Ribbon has take on a life of its own.

Coloring and Media of Awareness Ribbons

All across the world, the Awareness Ribbon has become a symbol of a show of support. We support our troops, breast cancer, and a whole host of other causes. They come in every color imaginable with many being dual colors or multi-colored and patterned.

You can find the Awareness Ribbons in just about as many forms as there are colors. From key-chains, tattoos, and bracelets to being sported on clothing, fabrics, handbags, and hats. Even your car can show its support by displaying a magnetic ribbon for whatever cause it is you choose to support.

Meaning of Awareness Ribbons

While the differing colors have meanings behind them, for many, the ribbons represent someone they know who has an illness or is across the sea fighting in a war. Others, it represents the ones they have lost to these causes. And yet others, just simply want to show their support in even this tiny way.

As a symbol, they unite all who sport them. Women will strike up conversations with strangers when they notice a ribbon. Men will nod in respect for the show of support on your vehicle. If you happen to have an unusual one that is not as well known, people will stop you to ask what its meaning is and why you have it.
Show Your Awareness Ribbon Off

By keeping the Awareness Ribbons out in the public eye, we are helping to remind everyone that our lives are precious. Wherever and however you choose to display your ribbon, do it proudly and loudly. It is your right as a citizen of the world to make others aware. Hopefully, your show of support will increase the awareness of your cause.

We at Becky Boo's Bowtique are edging towards the second full weekend of the Think Pink Charity Bidding Event. The first weekend and this week have brought in an amazing show of support with the charity bidding.

To the left, you can see one of the many great items we have in the auction. Yesterday, there were a few new items added and we are waiting for a few vendors items that will still be to come. Once those are in, no more items will be added to the event.

This particular shirt is a fitted XL pink T-shirt with a really nice iron-on transfer on the front for Breast Cancer Awareness.

We at Becky Boo's Bowtique are very committed to raising awareness and funds for this awesome foundation. All proceeds go to the Susan G Komen for the Cure foundation in hopes that one day with enough help from us and others like us they will be able to find a cure.

SpareNone and the Care Bear

This is a late entry into the Think Pink Charity Bidding Event at Becky Boo's Bowtique, but how could I not resist giving it a shout out today.

This Breast Cancer Awareness Care Bear is drawn in colored pencils by none other than our own SpareNone. Okay, I know you are saying this isn't all that unique, but really it is if you know the story of the artist.

Many artist struggle with the fear of rejection and all of that as it just kind of goes along with the territory. Imagine though if you will a child wanting to carry on his love for art, but going through the world in black and white. How in the world can this child make it work? Well, SpareNone has managed to do just that with his works. You can find this Care Bear as well as several of his works up for auction in the Think Pink album on Facebook.

When you live in shades of gray with only a hint of colors peeking through to you, you learn to compensate. It's much the same for those who have survived breast cancer with single and double mastectomies or those who have lost their hair to chemo. You find a way to make it work. Trouble is we are still trying to find a cure and the money for research, to help women who don't have medical insurance, etc is not always available. With October being Breast Cancer Awareness month, Becky Boo's Bowtique rose to the challenge and what started out as a wish to donate just $100 dollars has blossomed into the potential to donate a $1000 dollars or more. What is Ms. Kathy Bidding on?

That's right it's this painting by John Banas out of Asheville, NC. John donated this painting to us at Becky Boo's Bowtique for the Think Pink Charity Bidding Event.

He classifies this one as abstract and it is signed by the artist. The picture here really doesn't do it justice at all. It's a unique blend of blue hues on a 18 X 24 canvas that is ready to be hung as soon as you receive it.

Many vendors including Ms. Kathy from KnR's Emporium have donated items to the auction and it is in full swing. All you have to do to become a part of this is have a facebook page and come over to our page and like it. Then go to the Think Pink photo album and decide what you want to place your bid on. It really is that simple.

Any given day a woman dies somewhere from breast cancer. On that same day a man might be diagnosed with it. We at Becky Boo's Bowtique are committed to raising awareness and helping to fund the research for a cure. 100% of the bids from this event will go to the Susan G Komen for the Cure foundation. Exciting Weekend

This weekend was the opening weekend of the Think Pink Charity Bidding Event over at Becky Boo's Bowtique. In putting together this event, we never imagined the show of support that we would get nor that we would exceed our original goal of a $100 dollar donation to the Susan G Komen for the Cure foundation by 5 times that amount in just one weekend.

The event runs until October 23rd with a few late arrivals on the scene coming later this week and there is pretty much something in everyone's price range. We have buy it now items that are just $1.50 a piece all the way up to items that have a high bid of $300 dollars at this time.

Not only are women affected by this disease, but it has been reported that on an average 1,700 men are diagnosed each year with more coming all the time. Early detection is the key. We urge you to get those mammograms and keep getting them.

One thing I want to do here with the blog is not only bring out awareness for breast cancer but to showcase some of the great items that we have up for bids. The necklace here was donated by my good friend Kathy Seymour who runs KnR's Emporium. She jumped at the chance to be a part of this event when I mentioned it to her and never hesitated in donating this great item.

You can see a few of her items via our page and if you click through to her page and like it be sure to tell her you found it through us. It will help her see where her advertising is coming from in the long run.

We at Becky Boo's Bowtique have unveiled the mystery painting and kicked off the Think Pink Charity Bidding event. It opened yesterday around 10 am after a little computer glitch that I had and in no time we were receiving bids.

We are infinitely grateful to Patrick Gorman Pettis for the donation of his work, his time, his blogging, and sharing of this event.

As such, the results have left us a bit in awe of what we set out to accomplish. You see my daughter, Becky, had a wish to be able to donate $100 dollars to the Susan G Komen for the cure and she had from her birthday this year until her birthday next year. She moved up the date to coincide with the end of this year. Just with what was bid yesterday, she has managed to triple that donation and then some.

We all see the pink ribbons, we all care, but it only takes a second of your time to go over there and make a bid. All the proceeds will go directly to the foundation. Why do we care so much? In my family alone, we have had enough scares to make this a reality for all of us. We have a family member who battles cancer of a different kind daily. We have mothers, sisters, brothers, fathers, grandparents, aunts and uncles we worry about.

Cancer can be a fickle creature. You never know where it will strike. We are deeply moved to do what we can and this is the one we feel is the most important for it not only strikes at the heart of women, but men and children as well. Help us, help them find a cure, before you hear the heart wrenching story of a teenaged girl who had to go through a double mastectomy. All it takes is a small amount to help. If you can't bid on the larger items, there are pins you can buy without making a bid. We at Becky Boo's Bowtique urge you to help us and your own friends and family in this fight.

The Final Countdown

We are on the final countdown of the Think Pink Charity Bidding Event. It will open on our page at Becky Boo's Bowtique tomorrow, Sept. 23rd, at 9 am EST. We are terrifically excited about this event as we hope to raise a phenomenal amount of money for the Susan G Komen for the Cure campaign.

Along with the many items that we ourselves have donated to this event, we have special donations from Goodies 4 All, KnR's Emporium
and two artists. One John Banas, an artist out of Asheville, NC and the other is Patrick Gorman Pettis.

Patrick can be found on Facebook as well as via his blog which is linked to his name at the beginning of this sentence. You may also view his work at ArtMajuer. His artwork has sold and hangs in many a home, this is an opportunity to get one of his fine works for yourself and support a great cause at the same time.

We are donating all proceeds except for the small fees to ship the item to the winning bidder to the Susan G Komen for the Cure foundation. It is our sincere hope, you all will come out and support this great event that runs until Oct. 23rd. As breast cancer awareness month approaches this is an opportunity for you all to do something tremendous with supporting the cause.

Observations from Prissy P

I didn't realize momsie had snuck this picture. Yeah, that is me, I'm Prissy P and that is one of my normal hang outs when momsie is in the that room where there is this machine here that types amazing words and that other one that turns out things she cuts from fabric and what not.

I got to tell you, I don't think momsie is quite right sometimes. You see last night, I was all set to go to bed and she decided to watch this thing, she calls them movies and yeah they move, hehee...I like watching the action, but she wouldn't let me watch this one last night, said it wasn't for kitteths. Well, alrighty then. Don't think it was for her either the music was a bit scary and that guy in the mask with that shiny thing that chops veggies and meat, so I went off an hid in the other room during that little slasher thing.

Anyway, I came back and the woman has this huge ball of thread and one of them fabric things and is sticking a sharp little shiny thing with the thread attached to it in and out of the fabric. I really thought that was what that thing with the foot pedal was for but guess she got motivated by the masked man and decided to mangle her own things in her own way without all the blood.

Still though from my usual perch, yeah the one in the basket, I got to tell you. She can really crank out some stuff. I don't know what goes on it that pretty little head, but I see the fabric as a play toy and she sees it as art. And I got to tell ya, I really have to make myself known when she gets to going or she would totally forget about me. So along with being totally adorable in my little basket, I rub, and talk, then I rub some more and when that don't work I take a flying leap onto the back of her chair. That one usually works but tends to get my behind swatted if she can catch me.

Hehe...well, she is tired today, but I know I best get off here before she catches me. She don't like it when I get on this thing. Anyway, I hope I can sneak back in and give you some more of my observations some times folks. Meowwwww....oh shoot I got to run she back with that black brew she drinks, laters.

Recycling Old CD's into Crafts

If you are like most people, you have moved your CD collection to a notebook style carrier. You may go through this from time to time and discard CD's that you no longer listen to or have become too worn for the laser in your player. What do you do with those jewel cases and worn CD's? They are environmentally unfriendly as they don't decompose, so here are a few ideas to tickle your imagination and get you started on recycling them.

CD Jewel Case Crafts

Let's start with the jewel cases. Many will just toss them aside, but there are a lot of different things you can do with a jewel case you aren't using to store your CD. Here are just two:

1. Stained Glass Sun-catcher - This is a bit different from using the CD as a sun catcher. It takes a little more effort, so this project is rated moderately easy. Open the jewel case and remove the holder for the CD. Pick a design and paint it using stained glass paint and leading onto the front cover of the jewel case. If you have a limited ability in design, you can buy kits from your local craft store with decals and leading to create your design. Once the paint is dry, snap the jewel case shut. In the upper left hand corner, drill a small hole and string fishing wire through the hole. Stringing it this way will allow you to hang your beautiful new creation in a diamond shape in your window from a suction cup hook. Enjoy the way the light now plays through your stained glass sun-catcher.

2. Do you collect butterflies or insects? Maybe you have a collection of small thin shells or another small object. You can use your jewel cases to create a nice wall display for these things. Open up the jewel case and remove the CD holder. For the insect collection it is recommended that you place a square of batting or felt inside the jewel case. Attach your insect. Snap the jewel case shut. For the collection of shells, you could use a small amount of glue to hold them in place or fill the jewel case with a little sand and place the shells decoratively in the sand. If you do this, it is recommended that you seal the jewel case with hot glue around the edges.

CD Craft Projects

Moving on to the CD's themselves. A worn out CD need not be thrown out into the trash. We've all seen Christmas ornaments and clocks made from old CD's, here are a few new ideas for you:

1. Use the CD as a reflector. Don't buy expensive reflectors for your mailbox or the end of your driveway. Add old CD's to your mailbox post by drilling a hole in them and then screwing them to the post.

If the end of your driveway is hard to see at night, make a reflector out of the CD. Drill a hole in a 24 inch post and through the CD. Screw the CD to the post and place them in the ground at the end of your drive. Your family and friends will thank you for making the drive more visible at night.

2. Use the CD in a candle display. Place under pillar candles or tapered candles in holders to reflect the glow from a burning candle. These can be glued together to make a large base for a large candle or used individually.

3. Use the CD as a template for the perfectly round circle pattern.

4. Use the CD as a coaster. Buy some thin cork sheets from your local craft store. Use the CD to cut the cork into a round shape. Next, cut a piece of felt using the CD as a template. On one side of the CD glue the cork. On the bottom of the cork glue the felt.

5. Use the CD as a scarecrow in your garden. String a few CD's in your bean patch to keep birds and other animals from stealing your garden bounty.

6. Make bowls out of the CD. Place the CD in the oven over a metal bowl on low temperature or use a blow dryer on high heat setting to soften the CD. Once the CD is softened, they can be shaped into a bowl. Glue another CD to the bottom to create a custom candy dish. If you would like to use your new bowl and the hole in the bottom is a concern, you can seal this with silicone sealer bought at your local hardware store. Add in a decorative gem or stone before the sealer is set to create a unique finishing touch.

A Word of Caution when working with CD's and Jewel Cases

As with any project, it is wise to use caution and the proper tools. When working with CD's or their jewel cases, it is recommended that you use safety goggles or glasses and where protective gloves. While this is a malleable plastic, it can break and cut just like glass does.

can be used in many ways to create art for our homes, toys for our young, and environmentally friendly yard helpers. Help to save the environment by not throwing out these great pieces of material. Use them to bring out your creative side.

Think Pink Charity Bidding Event

The "Think Pink Charity Bidding Event" over at Becky Boo's Bowtique is gearing up to be a spectacular event. Last night, we made a major announcement that I have been working on for the better part of the last month. Before I get to that though, let me tell you about the event.

We at Becky Boo's Bowtique are very moved by this cause. It has effected all of us in the family in some way over the years. This is our chance to raise money for the Susan G. Komen for the Cure and donate it. The bidding event will run from September 25th until October 23rd. This gives us a good month to get some great bids on the items we will have listed as well as time to get all transactions finished up before the end of October. We want to be able to make our donation by the 31st which is the last day of Breast Cancer Awareness month.

Okay, now to the exciting news! Along with the crafters who sell their wares at Becky Boo's Bowtique, we have donations already coming in for items to auction off.

First up we have Ms. Kat, from KnR's Emporium. As you know, if you follow my blog this lady is a very special friend.

She and I met some time ago and have developed one of those relationships that just withstands time. She has donated a spectacular necklace of which I will unveil on the 25th of September.

In the meantime, scoot on over to her shop on Facebook and check out the great selection of jewelry and cast iron items up for grabs at great prices.

Her cousin, has also joined into the fray and is donating a mask for the bidding event from Quixotic Masks. I've requested one in pink, but you can check out her page and request a special order in any color combination.

And finally, the one I've been working on over the last month. Patrick Gorman Pettis is an artist that I met on Facebook not too long ago. I became fascinated by his work when I learned that he creates his colors from natural elements. You can check out his blog to see this plus there is a link there to his gallery where his paintings are for sale. I never imagined that this wonderful soul would come through for this event in the way he did when I asked. I figured there would be all kinds of legal issues that would just make it impossible. How to make a Car Air Freshener

Once the new car smell has faded, how do you keep the interior of your car smelling fresh? Most people will resort to the store bought, pressed paper varieties of air fresheners that come in as many shapes and sizes as there are sodas out there. The thing with these is their smell or scent doesn't last very long, which leads to added trash in our environment and buying more and more of them.

In order to save a little money and help the environment at the same time, you need to think about making your own car air freshener. You can reuse them over and over thus the help for the environment, plus you don't have to settle for the scents and designs on the store shelves.

Supplies to Make Your Homemade Car Air Freshener

You will need the following basic supplies to make your car air freshener:

    * sheets of craft felt
    * fabric glue
    * hole punch
    * scissors
    * clear thread
    * essential oil of your choice

Depending on the design you choose, you might want to embellish your car air freshener with some of the following:

    * craft eyes
    * beads or sequins
    * flat buttons
    * glitter

If you do add additions to your car air freshener, remember to get a clear drying glue like Tacky Glue to adhere them to the craft felt.

Create Your Homemade Car Air Freshener

Instructions for creating your homemade car air freshener Start by picking your shape. Once you have an idea of the shape, use a highlighter to trace the design onto a piece of paper to form a pattern piece. Cut out your pattern piece.

Cut out two pieces of felt using your pattern piece.
Punch a hole at the top of your design for hanging later.

Cut a piece of the clear thread and string through the hole. Tie off the ends to form a loop and hand from your rear view mirror.

When the scent starts to fade, just add a few drops of oil to your homemade car air freshener and rehang.

The CD Homemade Car Air Freshener

If you would like a little more glitz when making your homemade car air freshener, you can take an old used CD or an unburned one and two pieces of the craft felt. Cut out a desired shape to fit over the hole in the center of the CD. Glue each piece of felt over each side of the CD to cover the hole in the center. Embellish however you would like. To create the hole for hanging, heat up a thin piece of metal and burn a hole through the plastic CD. String with clear thread and add the essential oil of your choice to the felt. Renew as necessary.

How to turn your blue jeans into a work of art

Blue jeans are an item of clothing that can be found in everyone's closet. However, if you want the ones with the splotches of bleached out spots that are so pupular and can't afford them, what are you to do? You need to learn the art of bleaching your blue jeans.

Art of bleaching? Yes, it is an art form to get the splotches just right and that is why they cost so much in the store. You have to know a certain amount of information before you can create the look you want. As in any other art form there are certain tools of the trade that accomplish the right look of the piece. When it comes to bleaching blue jeans, you need to know what will work and what won't.

Tools of the Trade:

Sponges for dabbing on the bleach
Toothbrushes for splattering on bleach
Paint brushes for creating a design
Spray bottle for spritzing

You will want to test these different mediums on an old pair of jeans first to see how each responds and what you like best.

Your bleach solution is a critical part of your tools. You can go full strength, half strength, or quarter strength. Anything less than quarter strength is not recommended.

It is advisable that you work in a well ventilated area with outside being preferable. Wear gloves to protect your hands (latex gloves can be bought at the dollar store) and an apron to protect the clothes you are wearing from splatter.

Stuff your jeans with newspaper to prevent the bleach from running through to the other side and creating a design there that is not desirable. Dilute the bleach with water only. Use plastic containers to hold your solution as you work with it. Bleach small areas at a time, rinse and repeat. Take your time and have fun, after all you are creating a work of wearable art.

Leaving the bleach solution in place for a few seconds to a few minutes will create different faded effects on your blue jeans. Again, test the way it works on another pair of jeans first so you have a good idea of how long to leave it before you rinse the jeans.

Once you have the desired effect, dispose of the solution. Use it to clean the bathroom or pour it down the drain with a full course of water running at the same time. It can damage the septic system at full strength. Never pour it outside where an animal might lick at the liquid. Machine wash and dry your work of art to set it by washing it by itself on a cold water setting.

One other word of caution -- Before you start creating your masterpiece, make sure you have permission to do this if you are still living at home and your parents are providing your clothing. Clothes cost a lot of money and if for some reason you don't like the effect that is created and the jeans end up in a trash heap, never to be worn again it is likely mom or dad might be a tad mad.

This is all it takes to turn your blue jeans into a work of wearable art. Be careful when you are bleaching blue jeans, be patient, and be sure to enjoy showing off your new artwork.

Now, on to the topic of the day, Social Marketing. Both of our stores are located on Facebook and you can shop right from the page. It's fairly simple, but you really have to put a lot of work into gaining fans and building that fan base. One of the ways we did that over at the hand made shop was to sponsor some giveaways. These are a lot of fun and you do gain a lot of fans, but what we found is that now everyone thinks its okay to just enter these contests to gain free merchandise from the stores.

Not a bad thing, but most only seem to really like the page to gain access to these free items and don't really check out the stores and what they have to offer. There are many of us who are trying in these hard economic times to support ourselves with this venue and now since we have seen what happens after a giveaway ends, we have had to put an end to the participation in such events. It's just not financially feasible to do it any longer when fans will like the page just for the freebie and once they don't win they dislike the page.

At our particular shops, to us it isn't about the numbers, but about the genuine customer. The one who saw our items and liked the page for that reason. The ones who will come back often to see what sales we have going on and what new merchandise is being offered. It is about how we can keep the prices low, offer free shipping, and build a loyal customer base. No, not about the numbers at all for us.

So, while we at Becky Boo's Bowtique and Bellia's Retail Closet won't be offering up freebies anymore, we will continue to strive to bring you excellence in customer service that goes above and beyond your expectations. Come check us out and remember we love custom orders.

Social Marketing and What Not to Do

As many of you know who read my blog, my daughter and I have gone in together to run a shop on Facebook. Facebook is a large social market and many businesses small and large have created pages to network their business. In the great scheme of things this is an awesome way to network, but it can go wrong.

How you might ask?

Well, for one there are thieves out there that will take your ideas and make the same thing and then undercut your pricing. Ok, so the idea isn't really yours, because at some point in time you saw it somewhere and basically did this same thing. If you were smart, you created it in your own unique way and thus won't suffer from a fallout of lawsuits. However, you can't take claim for the idea as souly your own. You can't get pissy because someone is doing the same or similar thing to what you are doing.

If you want to build your business, what you have to do is go above and beyond your competition. So, let's take a little scenario as a for instance: you decide that you should start selling the nifty little things that you've made for all your friends as gifts, yeah you got to make some money if you are going to keep buying the materials, anyway one of the people who likes your page pops up with almost the same thing only at a fraction of the cost. Now, remember this idea really isn't yours, you've just take it upon yourself to recreate something you saw. What should you do?

We actually had this happen this last week and what we did was get mad and then we took a step back and realized that life goes on and it isn't the end of the world. We reworked a few things and came up with a step up to the ideas that is uniquely our own. Did we go in and delete these people as friends? No, that would have been childish. Did we confront them? Again, no, another childish move. We just rethought our product and brought it out fresh and new.

If you expect to survive in the world of social marketing, you can't act childishly. You must take the responsibility of your business and move it forward. So, with that said, we would greatly appreciate it at Becky Boo's Bowtique if you would come over and let us know what you think or our products. Thursday Morning Shout Out!

Well, we, or should I say Prissy and I are up early this morning and raring to go. After the wonderful day I had in sales yesterday over at Becky Boo's Bowtique, I thought what better way to share the love than to share some of the wonder stores we have come across in a travels as a new store on Facebook.

First up, we have KnR's Emporium. Here in this shop, you can view all sorts of cast iron items from the everyday kitchen utensils to bookends. She has an ever growing supply of jewelry similar to the necklace at the right. I personally own a ring I bought from there and simply love it.

This shop owner has become a great friend to me over the last year and we share many trials and tribulations of the selling online journey, as well as, the everyday mundane tasks of running our personal lives. Come on over and check her out.

Next, we have Quixotic Masks. If you are ever in need of a lovely mask for a party or you want to add a bit of flare to your room decor, you really should check this one out.

These masks are exceptional in quality and are done at a very reasonable rate. The owner is willing to work with you on style to make it your very own. You just can't do better, in my opinion, in quality and customer service.

Misty Lady Beading became a friend when she sponsored a giveaway on her page. It ends in a few days so be sure to check it out. For me though, the items that she offers at reasonable rates like the earrings I just bought or the mortar I got from her husbands store can't be beat.

Had a little game of "Who said that line or famous movie quotes" last night and Ashlee Parcel won a 15% off coupon towards a purchase of her choice from the Bellia's Creations albums over at Becky Boo's Bowtique.

She chose the Clemson Tote Purse ensemble featured at the left. Her package will be going out in the mail today.

I've tried many venues eBay, Webstore, and the like to sell my items, but the social media network of Facebook and the thousands of vendors who are now using it to sell their wares has made it possible to actually start having sales. It is so easy to set up and with a lot of marketing in the last three weeks since we opened, we have now had two successful sales with what I am sure is only more to come.

Along with tooting our horn, I would like to mention that we are gathering together a huge auction to take place beginning Oct. 1, 2011. This auction is a charity fundraiser for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. We hope to have a large number of handcrafting vendors with their items up for auction. Part of the proceeds will go to the foundation. All you have to do if you are a handcrafting vendor with a Facebook page is go to our store at Becky Boo's Bowtique like the page, then find the Think Pink Auction photo album, read the rules and agree to them. Then let us know you would like to be a part of the auction.

A few days ago, I brought you "New Way to Shop". In this I told you about the new shop that my daughter and I have opened on Facebook. Well, today, I wanted to bring you an update to the story. The shop which you can get to via the picture link to the left.

Becky Boo's Bowtique is doing very well. We have been open for business just under three weeks and we have already celebrated our three hundredth fan giveaway.

We have participated in Beach Strolls to garner new fans, held contests, participated in giveaways from other vendors, and are currently holding an auction with yet another vendor.

Facebook makes having a shop online extremely easy. We celebrated last night with our first sale and are looking forward to an ever increasing fan base with more and more sales.

Findin Samhain Costumes Right in Your Closet

This article is about the economy and using what you have in your closet to create a multitude of Samhain/Halloween costumes for you and your family.

All of us have skeletons in our closets, but what else might be lurking back there behind your husbands old trench coat? Old trench coat, now wait a minute what can we do with that old thing. Shake the moths out of it they don't need it. They are fat enough already. Is there an old hat back there or maybe one grandpa might have hanging around. Add some Clark Kent glasses and you can have... aw you guessed it Clark Kent or a detective.

Prom 1980

Have you been hanging on to a prom dress from the late 70's or early 80's? Turn that dress into your little girls vision of a queen or princess. Add some butterfly wings and she turns into a fairy for the night.

What about that old tux your husband couldn't possibly fit into anymore? Your son could become Count Dracula with a few little added accessories.

Black and Red

Red dresses with the addition of horns attached to a red headband can turn into the perfect she-devil costume.

Black dresses are great to add cloaks to and go out as a witch. Use black construction paper to make your hat and embellish it with glitter and black feathers.

You can also turn the little black dress into a cat costume by adding ears to a headband and a tail made out of black stockings. Keep the waist intact on the stockings and slip it around your waist. Cut off one of the legs and fill the other one with stuffing to make a tail that stands at attention as you parade around meowing for treats.

Scrubs

Scrubs are perfect for a number of things:

You can become a psycho escaped from the mental ward. Just throw a bathrobe over the scrubs and wear slippers.

You can be a surgeon of course.

A dead patient is another great thing to do with scrubs.

Uniforms

Whether it is a football uniform, cheerleader or some other type of uniform, these make great base outfits. The football star, the dead cheerleader, or turn them into little vampire versions.

High school uniforms make great bases for the costume too. Your teen might want to as long as it is ok with you turn her uniform into a bit of a sex kitten look. While the boys might want to trash out their uniform to make them look more goth.

Sweats and bed sheets

Sweats are great to use to make costumes out of for your child that wants to be a ninja. Just dress them in a black pair of sweats and add a black mask. Make some cardboard cutouts of throwing stars and cover them in aluminum foil. Attach them to the waist of the sweat pants and he will be the best dressed ninja out there. You could go one step farther and create a cardboard sword too.

Bedsheets are the standard for making a ghost but take it a step farther and add your old gold stretch belt and turn your daughter into a Greek goddess.

Going into the closet...

is easy and cheap when you use your imagination to create different costumes. Your children will have a ball creating their outfits and your wallet will thank you.

Becky Boo's Bowtique -- Guest Post

Becky Boo's as most of you know is ...

my online selling name. I offer up many items from things around the house to the most important thing to me, MY BOWS.

Once again I am relocating and will now be holding my bow business in my new house in South Carolina. I got started making these cute hair accessories in April of 2009 when I needed something to do with my free time. I have tried many craft avenues and none held my interest except this one. It all began with clippies or hair clips whatever you choose to call them and branched out to KORKER bows and headbands. Be on the look out for flip flops soon to come.

What exactly is a KORKER?

Korker's are the accessory to a barrette, clippie, rubber band, headband and much more. Korkers are made from grosgrain ribbon as it is the best for keeping curl. Some people will say you can use other kinds but 3/8 grosgrain ribbon will always be your best choice.

So how do you make the ribbon curl?

In the video below she tells you how to accomplish the curl, however based on my personal experience in making korkers I have to disagree with her. She will tell you to heat the oven to 275 degrees and this part is true, however you do not need to cook the ribbon for more than 10 minutes, 15 minutes tops. She says 25 but that is entirely to long. Not only does cooking the ribbon accomplish the curl, you also have to have wooden dowels and wood clothes pins. What you do is wrap the ribbon around the dowel by pinning the end to one end of the dowel with one clothes pin. When you get to the end cut extra off with scissors and use a lighter to singe the end of the ribbon. Attach a clothes pin to the end of the dowel after singeing is complete. Place all of the completed dowels on a cookie sheet where the ribbons don't touch each other as some ribbons do bleed and cook for no more than 15 minutes. Once your ribbon has finished cooking and it has cooled you can remove the clothes pins and the ribbon from the dowels. The ribbon you have cooked should slide off easily or you can use the method the lady in the video uses but that takes more time.

** NOTE: cook ribbons in big batches to save time as well.

How do you know how long the pieces should be?

After you have removed your ribbon from the dowels it is time to cut them to make your korker. Each ribbon will a lot you 4 or 5 pieces. Lay the long strand out in front of you and count 5 or 6 spirals or less if you want a poofier korker. Cut the ribbon into the length you would like however anything less than 4 is a harder to work with. I usually do 5 spirals which warrants me 4 pieces. after they are cut you want to use a lighter to singe each end of the ribbon so it does not fray. Some say you can cut it with a wood burner to save time, though I have not personally tried this method so I am not sure if it works.

I have my pieces cut now what?

When I made my first korker bow it did not come out so great. I did not do the research I should have done to make my bow so I assumed that gluing each piece together was the best way to attach all the pieces without them falling off. As I said this did not look so great. I did some research and found that sewing needle and strong thread were my best bet. I always double my thread by folding it in half then looping through the needle, this creates a 4 strand thread that is sure to hold. After you have your needle threaded and a knot has been tied at the end you can start the korker assembly. Lay out your pieces in the pattern you want to use them in and then start stacking them on your needle piece by piece. once all pieces you intend to use are on the needle, pull the needle through and hold the korker down kind of flat so you can see the hole the needle came out of. Send the needle back through as close to the original hole as possible without going through the same hole. Pull through and cut as close to the hole as possible leaving about a centimeter hanging out. Apply a small dab of hot glue to the tail of the thread handing from the korker to ensure it does not come out. this will be the bottom of your korker. On the top of the korker you can leave it alone or add a small dab of hot glue and an embellishment of some sort like roses, buttons or beads. Now your korker is complete.

What do I put the korker on?

I personally use things like fabric covered headbands, clips, stretchy headbands, barrettes, rubber bands with or without metal clasps, and soon flip flops.

Who primarily wears these types of bows?

Toddlers and babies are usually the crowd you are aiming for but I would say the age limit is probably 11 or 12.

Do these bows actually sell?

Though I have not made a sale with my bows, they do sell. The problem is finding the right buyers as well as the number of people that make these bows. It is a large competitive craft as everyone thinks theirs in better than the next persons. Weather mine sell or not I love making them to help relax me, kill some time, or just for fun.

What are the supplies I will need?

Here is a list of the items you need to complete your bow:

    * Hot glue gun
    * Wooden dowels 1/4 inch thick
    * Wood clothes pins
    * 3/8 in grosgrain ribbon
    * Needle
    * Strong thread
    * Embellishments
    * Barrettes, clips, rubber bands, fabric covered headbands or stretchy headbands
    * Zip lock bags to store the complete hair piece in
    * Cookie sheet
    * Oven

The most important thing to remember is to have fun and take your time, speed comes the more you do these bows.

My daughter who is very handy with the computer has created a new page where we will be bringing you a new way to shop. Becky Boo's Bowtique can be found at Facebook and as the days progress we will be adding more and more merchandise in the way of hand-crafted purses, hair bows and accessories, dresses, t-shirts, and much more.

You'll want to make sure you stop by and like the page. Once we hit 50 likes we will be doing a give-a-way and one lucky winner will win something fabulous.

The two pictures here are from my collection, but there are hair bows and accessories from her collection, some wind catchers from another collection and like I said there will be much, much more added as time goes on.

It's Raining Men

It's Raining Men was written in 1979 and offered up to some great women in pop music, but the Weather Girls finally published and performed it in 1982. The end video montage shows the awesome bodies of some of the most delectable men in the acting world.

In the rest of this tribute to the topic of Men, I'm going to give you a brief (pun intended) look at three of my favorites from Hollywood. Actors come and go, they grow old and change, but they are forever indelibly etched on our minds eye in the films and shows we have enjoyed them in, so without further delay here they are:

Anyone who knows me, knows that I am a died in the wool Johnny Depp fan. He charmed me with Sweeney Todd: The Demon of Barber Street, he brought out the want to be wench in Pirates of the Caribbean, and he had me swooning in at his portrayal of John Dillinger in Public Enemies.

His acting is, in my opinion, extremely versatile and flamboyant. Have there been movies that were less than great? Yes! But, because he has come into his own over the years we forgive the bad and look forward to the future and what he will bring us next.

There are many of his movies that I personally have not seen, but I am looking forward to several that have recently come out like Rango, and then there is the ever awaited sequel to the Pirates of the Caribbean series that I did pay the big bucks to see.

His ability to conform to just about any character is what makes him truly unique in his abilities. Check out some of his movies if you haven't, I'm sure you will find them wonderful and the man fascinating.

Yul Brynner

I had the pleasure of meeting this man when he and his troup came to Atlanta and performed The King and I at the Fox Theater. His films and acting were a challenge for him and his Yugoslavian accent, but because of that accent he stands out as unique.

He played the King beautifully and then could assume the roll of western gunslinger in The Magnificent Seven. He was a gentleman who loved life to its fullest. Unfortunately, because of his excesses, he died in 1985.

Russell Crowe

The bad boy Aussie. What more can be said? I fell in love with him in Gladiator and have followed his career ever since. His wild antics on and off set often get him in trouble but he is a classic in the right of passage.

His films include the most recent State of Play, Gladiator, A Beautiful Mind and my other favorite Cinderella Man. I'm not a sports enthusiast by any means but I loved this movie and the fact that he took the hits to make them look authentic in the film.

He also has a band and I offer up a video of a performance he did at the AFI ceremonies. It is a jazzy kind of smooth sound that washes over you if you give it a chance. Combine that with those sexy bedroom eyes and full lips and you are sure to fall for him, too.

Unique Gift Baskets

The holidays are right around the corner, yep just under six months to go before Yule, Christmas, or whatever it is you celebrate. You might be struggling with what to give as gifts this year. The economy has put all of us in a pinch and the one thing you can do that won’t cost you a lot of money is to create a gift basket in something other than the traditional basket.

The thing about giving gift baskets that makes them so unique is you don't have to use the traditional media of a basket to create your gift. Close friends and family will appreciate the time and effort you put into creating a gift basket unique to them if it comes in a media that fits with the theme of the items in its holder. How many times have you gotten a gift basket with great goodies inside only to be stuck with a basket that you have no idea what to do with it?

Don't do this to your own family and friends? Think about the reason for the gift, first. Is it for a birthday, baby shower, holiday, or other special occasion? Now, think about the person who is going to receive the gift. Is this person someone you are close to and know fairly well? If so, it will make choosing a media to hold your gift items easier. If not, stick to the theme approach.

Teens and Baby Showers

The friend or family member who you know well can make choosing the right media easier or more difficult. The ever changing moods of teens is a tough one. One minute they might be into the pretty in pink decorating scheme while the next it could be all dark Gothic decor. What do you do in this instance? Check with the parents first and foremost before attempting to create a basket for a teen. You need to know what they are into for the approaching holiday.

The person whom you don't know is easier because you can stick with the theme of the event. Let's say you've been invited to a baby shower for a girl at work, but you really don't know her all that well. What do you do? It's a baby shower. You can use a multitude of differing media from diaper pails, to strollers, or storage bins to create your gift basket.

Sample Ideas

There is a multitude of different ideas you can use to create a gift basket even for the holiday season. Do you have a movie fan on your list? Buy a couple of cheap movies from the discount bin, throw them into a large bowl with some microwave popcorn and a couple of cans of soda. For the chef on your list, check out my hub on Christmas Goodies in a Jar and add whatever else would go with the gift -- for soup, put your gift in a stock pot and add a few pot holders and soup spoons; for the cocoa mix, put it in a large mug and add some candy canes.

Do up a travel bag for the person who travels a lot in your life. Get a travel size bag and add in the small travel size soaps and shampoos to it. Include various other toiletries like a toothbrush, floss, toothpaste, and breath mints. You could even add in a comb and brush, miniature sewing kit, etc. The possibilities for this one are endless.

Reminder

The one thing to keep in mind is make it a useful item that the recipient can incorporate into the scheme of their decorating or put to use in an area of their home or life. Unique baskets are great but a thing of the past when looking for a media to use to create a lovely unique gift basket. If you remember to not only make the items inside the container useful, but the outside as well, your gift will be treasured for years to come.

Setting Up the Creative Craft Space

No matter how large or small your home is you can set up a creative craft space that is well organized and uniquely your own. The trick is to think outside the box when searching for your own space for your creative endeavors in your home. How much space do you need? Do you need to be able to allow for drying time of paints or glues? Putting away a half-finished project is a pain. How can you create a space where you won't have to do this when family or other obligations call?

Finding Space

The first step is to figure out where you will set up the space. Many people don't use their formal dining areas for dining. Is this a space that could be utilized for your creative craft space? If it has potential, talk it over with your family to see how they feel about you taking over this space. Do you have a basement that is partially finished? Could this become your creative craft space? The possibilities are endless. You just have to look at your home with an open mind to find the right place that won't cause you undo stress because the kids are constantly taking your things or the family is always barging into it.

Accessories

Next, look at what you will need for your space. If you sew, you need a place for your sewing machine and a cutting surface. The cutting surface can double as the sewing stand, but after a while you will get tired of moving the sewing machine.

Scrap booking is a huge deal right now and as you add new and interesting tidbits to complete your books, it becomes an issue as to storage of paper, different kinds of scissors and glue. Think of different things you might have that could become a storage closet for your crafts besides plastic storage bins. Do you have an old armoire that was handed down and is just sitting in your bedroom unused? Think about adding some shelving to the inside to create a great hidden storage unit.

Lattice screens are easy to make and help to conceal craft areas. You can get the lattice precut by your local home improvement store, add a few hinges, and there you go. Instant screen.

Think outside the box

If you step back from the everyday uses of your home, there is sure to be a space where your creative craft space can be added. All you need to do is make it happen. Get everyone in the family involved. Let them know that this is the one thing that will make mom/dad happy. If mom/dad is happy, then everyone is happy. Once you have everything set up, take a deep breath and enjoy your new creative craft space.

Earning money from your hobby

Most of us have a hobby that we are passionate about. Wouldn't it be awesome to earn money from your hobby? It can be done with a little planning and fortitude. One of the most rewarding things in life is to have someone admire your handiwork. Turning that talent into a financially rewarding money-making business makes it all the more exciting.

Many men and women across this world have started out doing just this with their own talents. The hobbyist who makes unique wood crafts in their garage, someone who has taken their talent to crochet and started making a unique jewelry item, or the amateur photographer who is now selling their pictures to magazines and the like. It can be done. All it takes is just a little know how.

Start Small

Start out small and test the waters. Have a craft sale of your items instead of a garage sale. Let the kids collect the money so that you can wander amongst your customers to note what they say about your work or answer any questions they might have about an item. Once the sale is over it is a simple thing to tally what went fast and first.

Production

Think about this item. How hard was it to create? Can you mass produce it? Would gift shops be interested in buying it from you or possibly take it on consignment? What is the cost involved in making the item? Do you need a special place to craft the item? Do you need special equipment? All of these are questions you need to answer.
Family Time

You also need to give consideration to family and family time. Don't let the idea of a new business and earning money overshadow the family. Regulate who will mind the baby when you are crafting. Set up chore charts so the house doesn't fall apart while you are working. Take time off just like if you were at a regular 9-5 job.

The Plan

Next, figure out your business plan so that you are prepared to answer questions from your significant other on expenses. Ask for help in setting up the business from your significant other and family members. Get everyone into the game with their own special roll.

Produce as many of the item as you can and set up your marketing plan. Create a website. Check out the different places to sell your item on-line. Ebay, Etsy, and ArtFire are just a few to give consideration too.

Earning

Once you have enough of the item to made it is time to put it out there. Start selling and earning money from your hobby. Link up to other small businesses and join your Chamber of Commerce. No matter what your own pursuits may be, do not over look the opportunity to turn it into a money-making enterprise. Investigate all the possibilities because you can earn money from your hobby.

Brumbershoot, Brolly, or Umbrella they are all the same!

Do you know what a brumbershoot is or perhaps a brolly? Well, if you put two and two together by paying attention to the title, you've probably got it figured out by now. Yes, that's right. They are both different names for the umbrella.

Since, February 10th is umbrella day, I decided to look up the history of this little contraption that provides protection from the elements so well for us. I know it is a bit late in coming, but it is still useful since it is so dang hot this summer. How about you go get your brumbershoot and let's see where it came from...most likely China.

Originally, the name came from the Ancient Greeks, who called it an ombros. The Latins had a go of it and attached umbra to the object. Both of these mean to shade or be in shadow. Clearly, the original purpose was not to protect us from the element of moisture, but to shade us from the harsh rays of the sun.

Being of fair skin, I can get on board with this use of the umbrella quite well. I've used it for this method many more times than actually using it to keep from getting wet. For me, it is darn hard to remember to take the umbrella with me when it is raining, than to have one around when I'm lounging by the pool. Matter of fact, my personal umbrella resides in the car most of the time and does me little good from getting soaked going from the door to the car, because of this fact.

It is believed that the people of China and Japan might have been the first to devise a waterproofing method for their parasols by coating the paper with wax or lacquer.

Later on, as improvements to the design kept coming and the fabrics started changing, whale oil was used to coat the fabric to make it not only optimal in the shade, but also in a sudden downpour.

Over the years many new improvements have been made and we now have what many of us take for granted...the modern umbrella.

The umbrella can be traced back as a collapsible device used to shade a carriage in 21 A.D. when Wang Mang had one designed. Prior to that references have been made of a device used to shade the clergy, high priest, and ladies of the state all through Greece, Rome, Egypt, and other European continents can be sited.

In the late 1600's, John Evelyn wrote in his diary about a rare collection of umbrellas sent to a Roman Catholic Priest by the Jesuits of Japan and China.* This collection contained rare hand carved parasols. He described them to be like a ladies fan but much larger.

Increase Your Motivation by Doing What You Love

Motivation is that funny little thing in all of us that gets us up and moving to finish a project, do our chores or go to work in the morning. What happens when that motivation is lost? How do you get it back? If you are truly happy with yourself and your life this will not be an issue, but if there is something getting you down in your life it can throw everything out of balance. The thing to do is find that thing and throw it out. Can't throw it out? At the very least, you can alter it or your life so that you can get your mojo back.

Be happy with yourself!

What exactly does this mean? Being happy with yourself is essential for keeping your motivation at ever increasing levels. Yes, the chores are mundane and boring, however they still need to be done. When we become depressed or overly stressed, our motivational levels will decrease with each level we sink to in our despair.

In order to get the level of happiness with yourself, you have to really analyze what it is that is taking you into the downward spiral of despair. Figuring out what is creating this feeling and extinguishing it is the first step in increasing your motivation.

Whether it is outside influences, your home life, or your work life, you need to set things to rights. It's easy to say just get over yourself, but for some these things do have adverse effects on their motivation levels.

    * Outside influences are having a huge effect on most of us at this point. What do you do to change that effect? Stop going to the forums, stop watching the news and reading the paper, just stop doing your normal routine for a few days. You might be amazed at the uplift in your step if you do just one of these things.
    * Your home life might be in shambles. You can't just stop this one, but you can take a step back and try to look at what is happening that is causing the deep feelings of depression. If you are just feeling overwhelmed, it could be the outside influence that has had this adverse effect. However, if you and your loved ones determine it is not a product of outside influence, then something inside the home is broken and needs to be fixed. Seek outside help before things deteriorate further.
    * Your work life is directly related to the two above. When you let your home life or outside influences overwhelm you, your production and motivation at work will suffer. Fix the first two and the third will change. If it isn't the above, then maybe it is time to think about changing what you do for a living. Right now you have a job, take some night classes to start yourself on the road to a new and different work life.

Don't use these times as an excuse to be under productive at work and in your life. Use them to find a way to increase your motivation to be productive during the day.

Do the things you love!

It is important to do things that we love doing, but you also must remember to love yourself in return. Take the time to smell the roses, walk the garden path, see the new exhibit at the museum, or take a warm, relaxing bubble bath. Feed your mind with relaxing energy in order to regain your balance and motivation.

Find the time to do something that you do enjoy to counter balance that which you do not. If you love to read, take a book with you to work and get in a few pages on breaks and during lunch. If you love to paint, start small and set your work up somewhere that you can come back to it often. Having a hobby that you enjoy can eventually turn into a full time job if you work it around your existing job at first. Hate to mop or do chores period, put on your favorite music and dance around the house while doing them.

Keep your motivation...

alive by loving yourself first and then finding what it is that makes you happiest. Get rid of the negative forces surrounding you and implement strong positive vibrations in your home and work. keep an open mind to the mundane. Make those chores go by quickly and who knows you might even find a refreshing way to enjoy them so the next time you have to scrub the tub, it won't seem so much like a chore, but rather it will be exhilarating.

The video by Corbette Jackson was done in honor of Chris Landreau a local fire fighter in Coweta County, GA. On Tuesday, Chris lost his battle after suffering a stroke while at the lake with his family over the weekend.

Cancer is a sneaky disease that can affect any of us at any given moment. For Chris and his family, the diagnosis came late, he was already in stage 4. Efforts were made to raise money for treatment, firemen from the community volunteered their time to help take him to his chemo treatments. The community rallied and has now lost a great man. My heart goes out to his family, especially his wife and little girls. He will be sorely missed.

Hug your men today and thank the men and women who serve our communities if you see them out and about. They risk life and limb for little pay and even less respect.

The advent of the Internet has changed the way we do a lot of things. You can look up just about anything you want and find it on the Internet in some form or other. This change has also brought about a difference in how we look for books and other media, buy them and read them. Who out there is the best in the online market of book selling? The following will give you an overview of two well knows and an up and coming store. Amazon.com is surely the leader here with Barnes and Noble following a close second, however Books-a-Million can not be counted out.

Amazon.com

This site is fast becoming the go to site not only for books and media, but all sorts of other things as well. Whether you are looking for a book, audio book, or books by debut authors Amazon.com is by far the company to go to online. In the stratosphere of the Internet, they have well surpassed even the tried and true book sellers that have sites. Hands down for comparison sake, there is none.

What is it exactly about the site that makes it the supreme choice? Customer service. It is that simple. The site is well thought out and easy to navigate. It gives you, the customer, everything one could ask for in an online book seller. If you have a problem or a question, they are fast to respond to your needs. Delivery is available in several different formats from traditional books to eBooks.

The advent of Kindle and other eReaders makes Amazon.com a great source as they support most of these options for downloading a book to read. They have brand new books as well as used books. Enough really can't be said for them as to quality of service to their customers and they are always on the cutting edge of new and different ways to read.

Barnes and Noble Book Seller

A close runner up is Barnes and Noble. It offers many of the same options as does Amazon with the one main difference is you can shop online or visit their stores. The economic times have taken their toll on this particular book seller and they have had to shut several of their stores down, but their online sales are still going strong.

The site overall is not as user friendly as Amazon with it being too easy to get lost searching for a specific book or genre. They only cater to media sales so you won't be able to shop for new pots and pans at the same time as you are shopping for the latest Stephen King novel, but they do have a great selection of debut authors and unique gift items.

Books-a-Million Book Seller

Books-a-Million is fairly new in the competitive race with Amazon and Barnes and Noble but it is coming in strong. They do not offer up other media, only books, educational games, gifts and magazines.

The one thing that sets them apart is that they do offer this service inside their stores as well and the books are usually discounted or they are running great sales. It is very easy in the store or on their site to get more than what you were originally searching to find.

The in-store experience here is much like Barnes and Noble without the pretentious air. You will find people lounging in chairs, the coffee shop, or on the floor with books spread out around them.

The key to making a choice...
of where to shop for your media needs is what you are looking for in your book buying purchase. If you want to download the latest Harry Potter to your Kindle or you want to feel the books in your hand first, is all a matter of personal preference. Don't discount shopping around at several stores via online and in the store to see who has the best sales on the books you want. While Amazon.com may have a great price on their site, the others might be willing to beat their price to have you as a valued shopper. It certainly pays to shop around.

Snakes and more snakes!

The last week has been a rousing round of keeping Prissy from tearing out my screens on the back porch as she tried to claw her way to the snakes slithering around in the back yard. Last week, the first of these showed up sliding its way past my office window. I promptly called my dad and he came over. We searched, but sneaky little snake had disappeared into the unknown.

Two days later, there was another one frolicking in the sun near my back porch. I couldn't call dad as he was at an eye doctor appointment so I took the matter in hand and got my trusty revolver out. I took aim and fired only to miss, lol. But the offending creature, not to mention Prissy were both shocked at my behavior. The snake went off to hide somewhere and Prissy, well she wouldn't speak to me the rest of the day.

Yesterday, I had three in the yard all at the same time. One was about 5 ft. long, the two others were much smaller, but to me a snake is a snake and I don't like them being out there this close to the house. Prissy is a great snaker, though she can be a bit lazy at times. I just left the snakes to play, yesterday and they eventually went on their merry way.

Today, after hearing my tale of the three snakes, dad brought me my very own shotgun. I actually hit the tree I was aiming at so there may be some hope for me with this gun over the handgun, lol. As I was sitting here writing this little tale of the snakes up, Prissy spotted another of the offending creatures. I got my gun, my shoes and out the door I went, only to have the critter up and gone. Dang they are fast. Oh well, I can now be called the Snake Hunter.

Facebook Fan Pages

I have a lot of friends on Facebook, who have their own fan page for selling from home. I love these pages as they offer me up a great selection of choices of where to buy many different products and also let me know about products that I have not heard of in the past.

Nicole McCellon is no different. She offers up two different pages Mary Kay and For Every Home. You can check either one out by clicking the links. Now, of course I have heard of Mary Kay, and right now she has a fabulous sale going on so you want to be sure to check it out. For Every Home, though, is new to me and I like surfing her page to see what products they have to offer. Check them both out now for some great deals.

Well, hello there everyone. I'm not real sure what happened with Blogger this last week, but I'm glad it is back up and running. Today, I have a couple of new stores for your viewing pleasure. Contests, Contests, and More Contests

As promised, I'm bringing you some fabulous finds in today's blog post. And, yes, the theme is all about contests. Mainly, the ones that I've found on Facebook that my friends or friends of theirs are having at the moment.

Okay, up first is my new author love, Regan Hastings aka Maureen Child, she is having a sweet little contest over at her page to win a free t-shirt. All you have to do is go to her page and like it. Review of Visions of Magic by Regan Hastings

I read a series of books by Nora Roberts a few years back that got me interested in reading more witchy fiction. I have to say I enjoyed that series tremendously, but recently after reading all the whodunit type books my mom got finished with and not really able to get into a new series of vampire books my daughter is reading, I went looking for something different. I definitely found it and have been very pleased with my selection. So pleased in fact that I looked up the author on Facebook and liked her page. What did I find?

Visions of Magic by Regan Hastings is the first in what she calls the Awakening Series. The book is out in paperback and can be found at most local book stores.

Excerpt from the book back: Every witch has a destined mate, an Eternal who will serve as her guardian and complete her powers. Once the first of the coven has awakened, the witches must race against time to join with their Eternals and protect the relics that will prevent the destruction of the world...

Well, with a lead-in like that, I naturally had to pick this one up and see just what it held in store. I can honestly say this has been a very pleasant and sexy ride. It starts out filled with action and continues to increase in speed throughout the story. The chemistry between the main characters is awesome and strong. I definitely give this one a five star rating.

New Happenings!

It's been a week since I did my interview with Gramsgems over at Webstore and boy howdy has it been a week. Google rolled out the rest of the algo change and it seems everyone is now taking a hit. In light of that I have gone back to a few places that I had tested the waters for writing and started to build more on those sites. One is Bukisa, which you can see in the sidebar along with HubPages.

The funnest one though, is by far This is Freelance. It is an article directory site started and run by Oliver Whitman. I don't have too much work up there yet as I am planning a series for that site, but you really should check it out. Right now in these down times it is offering up 80% revenue sharing for writers. Man, I don't think anyone can beat that one.

Let's see, what else, oh yes, I've got listings up at Webstore again, which you can get to via the sidebar, as well as the sidebar slide of my eCrater store.

I've picked up a few jobs via an agency that caters to caring for the elderly and am loving it. If you have a loved one that needs a companion for a few hours a day or a little bit more care, be sure to check out Senior Helpers to see if they have an office in your area. I've included the link for you to make it a bit easier to find. What a great concept for not having to go to an assisted living facility and still feel like a productive person in your golden years with the help of a smiling, friendly person to assist you.

Beltane is coming up on the 30th and in preparation, I've been reading up on it and working on my Book of Shadows. I find the similarities surrounding the Sabbats and Esbats in Wicca to traditional Christian holidays simply fascinating in that there are so many who take the Pagan holidays so out of context, when there really is nothing spooky or demonic about them in any way.

An Interview with GramsGems from Webstore

From GramsGems: I really loved beading because no matter how busy I could leave and come back and Yes I have experimented with many mediums in Crafts but always return to my true love.

How did you get started in bead work? I started years ago in the 60's at a mission making to raise $$ in the Mid West --Prescott and Payson, AZ. Craft Fairs for about 15 years in the later years. I started doing special orders from family and neighbors over the years. I retired from Social Work and then when my Husband passed I started making for my neighbors in the Apartment complex where I live.

Where do you get the inspiration for your pieces?
I love road trips and have picked up SW flavor in many of my sales yet I also love the Mid West influence.

You sell on Webstore. Are there any other venues people can find your creations?
I have turned to the Webstore due to the economy and lack of venue for selling fairs and swap meets in my Golden Years. I am very new on line, but as you see I also leave the word age to more talented. I have no other listings except here, but I am toying with expanding .

Spring has sprung!

Ok, so it is finally here. Spring has sprung. The days are longer and warmer, so we are all thinking about outdoor activities. What exactly does that mean for those of us that sell online? It means you need to have a clearance sale for one. Get rid of the dead weight that is on your auction site and taking up room in your home.

The best way to do this is to take an inventory of the items that you have and figure out what is the absolutely lowest price that you can go on these items. Offer these items at this discounted price for a month and if they don't sell, get them off the online venue of your choice and pack them up to be relisted later on in the year.

The next thing you need to do is start marketing those items that people will be looking for now. Now, is not the time to be listing sweaters, jackets, or Christmas items. It is the time, however, to be listing items that shout out that you know exactly what is on people's minds. Some of these items might be:

Cleaning Supplies
Gardening Supplies or Equipment
Yard Games
Supplies for the Pool or Beach

On that note, most folks are looking for a great deal and looking to only buy what they need this year because of the economy. You want to promote an atmosphere in your online sales that says "Let's Get Jiggy" whether that be with spring cleaning, revamping the house with spring decor, or simply offering up some great supplies at rock bottom prices. You have to make them want to shop in your store instead of driving over to Lowe's or Wal-Mart.

Consider items like fans, flea and insect repelling aids, pet supplies, and other items that you might want for yourself at a great price and the convenience of not having to use the gas in your car to go and get.

Easter is later this year than it has been in the past so make sure to have some great items for that holiday in your online store. Also, now is the time to really start thinking ahead and get a jump on others by listing things for Mother's Day, Memorial Day, Flag Day, Father's Day, and Independence Day. These are the main holidays most will be looking to buy for in the coming months. If you get started now listing for these few holidays, your sales will keep rolling in all summer long.

Another great thing is to think seasonally and get those items out there months ahead of others. Keep them in your store until the season end and then have a huge end of season sale. Once you have gotten rid of most of those seasonal items you'll be in full swing with the next season and have never missed a beat.

The rule of thumb here is don't wait until the season springs on you like Spring has sprung on us here this year. Be ahead of the game by at least a month if not two. In theory, you should have and have had all your spring items listed at this point and be thinking about the end of spring sale along with what items to start listing for summer about now. If you are just getting into this market, then I would say you need to work on the upcoming holidays. You still have plenty of time to get a few Easter sales in, but your real focus needs to be the holidays that are at least two months out and summer items. If you think this way, there is no doubt that you will be generating sales from your online stores all year round.

New Store

I promised you all an update to the Increasing My Earning Potential that I posted yesterday, well here it is.

I've learned a lot since I opened my store on Webstore. While I believe the site has potential, it really wasn't the right fit for me. I did go back to eBay with a few listings, but that has been a nightmare in and of itself. If you have ever sold on eBay, you know that the fees alone can kill you. Not to mention the money spent on shipping materials and the like. This is why, I liked Webstore as you were able to keep all the profit with the exception of shipping materials and your PayPal fee. The thing that really didn't fit with me is the lack of support from the staff and the fact that the buy it now option couldn't stay up permanently.

I really needed a site that I could list my items for a price and leave them there while I work on marketing and creating new items or finding new items. After a bit more research, I found a wonderful site called eCrater.com. Here like Webstore, you keep the profits. You get a e-store for free and it is a really nice little store. Very clean and uniform. All the stores are set up the same except for the customization you can do to them with colors, pictures, logo and the like.

I set up shop with a new name too. Linda's Finds and Designs fits with what I want to do in my online shop. You can find all my hand made items(once I get them all uploaded) and the finds that I pick up here and there. As you can see in the side bar, you can also add your shop to your blog site, website, etc. They have a wonderful forum where you can introduce yourself and pick up all kinds of neat tidbits about how to sell on the site or buy on the site for that matter.

In an effort to streamline, this is just a beautiful addition to my efforts. I've also taken note of all the Google changes with the latest algo hit and have revamped my hubs to conform to their and HubPages standards. Reshaping the Bubble

This was my hub for when I hit 100 hubs at HubPages.

Wow, I made it to 100 hubs. I have to say I've been putting this one off for some time now. Life happened and threw me a curve, which is nothing new, but it took me a little time to settle down after this one and feel like I could get through it without a meltdown.

As most of my followers know, my oldest and also my baby moved across country to start her new life with the man she considers the one recently. This was the one I thought would never leave home, lol. To say we are close would be the understatement of the year and as I write this the tears still flow freely even though she has been officially gone now for two weeks.

Ok, so we will get to more of her and her move in a minute. First I want to get to how this all relates to the title of my 100th Hub: Reshaping the bubble! Many of you have already surpassed this monumental mark on HubPages and have written wonderful diatribes about what you have learned, your experiences here or tributes to people who have influenced you. Me, well, this is going to be a combination of all of that to show you how finding a site like HubPages can reshape your own bubble.

Bubbles

I think in life we all live in certain bubbles. Some focus exclusively on work thus becoming the workaholic so many of us seem to be, while others can retreat from life and become reclusive. The latter is the kind of bubble I live in at the moment. How in the heck did I end up in this reclusive bubble?

Mine started when I kicked husband number 4 to the curb in '05. I'd been through an awful battle with this man to gain custody of his children only to have them dumped in my lap to raise while he went out looking for other ways to entertain himself. I know, I am a big part of the reason that happened. My downward spiral started after a traumatic surgical experience in '04 to correct a previous mishap when I had a hysterectomy in '02. This second surgery almost took my life. While I was battling to survive the surgery, my family was left in the dark. They all went to bed the day of my surgery thinking all was fine only to wake up the next day to learn I was in ICU and still had not woken up. I was on life support and he had chosen not to call any of my immediate family.

At any rate, I didn't recover from this surgery whole. I had nightmares of having to repeat the process, I couldn't perform my wifely duties due to extensive clean up inside of scar tissue and losing almost 2 feet of my lower intestines. I was a physical and mental mess after this surgery, I know this and can't blame him in the long run for wanting affections that I just couldn't give.

The marriage ended with him moving out in '05 and me filing divorce in '06. However, there was a bit of unreal stalking that went on because he didn't want to have things really end. He thought I could be a wife and mother to his kids and came late in the night to stand outside my home on many a night.

This is where the reclusive bubble came in. I became terrified of leaving the house for fear he would be out there just waiting. I'm not sure what I really thought he would do, but I was scared. I lived in constant fear and then my son needed a place to stay in late '06 and I let him move in. I was a bit better having someone in the house with me, but I still refused to be out after dark. As a result of several things, this fear being a big part of it I left real estate in '07 as the market was crashing and have now been unemployed since.
The bubble saga

The fear never abated and the bubble became a tight little thing. I would go to the store only if I had someone with me. I cut myself off from anyone who wasn't immediate family. The kids became my source of life to the outside world. During the course of time since '07, my daughter has moved out and moved back in and now is gone again. My son stayed until '08 and has moved out to live with his father again.

I find that being truly alone has me rethinking the bubble and what to do about it. With the move of my last child to some 1800 miles away, I have discovered that I am much stronger than I thought and feel ready to go out into the world again to make my way as a whole person. Not one living in fear but one who knows her strengths and weaknesses. One who will be able to really make a difference in the world one day.

While bubbles can be good, this one has been a blessing. I have been able to find myself again and refocus on what and where I want to be. During this time is when I came to HubPages.
Finding HubPages

It's been almost a year since I found HubPages through reading the works of Randy Godwin and Marisa Wright. They both seemed to be having great success here and so I followed them on over from another site. However, I didn't start posting hubs right away. Long story short I was involved in a couple of other sites and put this one on hold.

In Sept. of '09, I re-evaluated where I was and didn't like the direction things were taking. Yes, I'd read all I could on how to get into the writing online venue but things were moving a might slow for me. I looked over my list of sites to check into further and remembered the good things I had heard the aforementioned writers say about HubPages, so I jumped back onto the site and after a few stops and starts found a great little piece of real estate to hang my hat in.

If it hadn't been for my association with HubPages, I am not sure I would have made it through my daughters move. As I said, she and I are very close and this was a bit traumatic for me as well as her grandparents.

I want to take this part to say thank you to two exceptional men here who stayed up late just letting me ramble. Hmrjmr1 and Dave272727 were really there during this trying time for me and for that I cannot tell you how grateful I am.

While my son moved off to another state as well, it wasn't near as heart wrenching as having my girl move across the county. I managed to get an afghan finished for her to take with her as a little piece of home loving. I also managed to fall apart completely the day she left and still am battling it daily. The little notes she sends home via IM or email help though as I see her building her life there and am really happy for her.

She is too cute really. She took pictures of every state sign they passed. (the girl has never really been out of GA) and she put up pictures of their mess when they unloaded the truck and has now posted pictures of how she has everything arranged in their apartment.

The love flows both ways through our computers now and over the telephone lines. Once a day at the very least I hear from her or she hears from me. I'm really looking forward to the day that I can get my scared little self on a plane and fly out there to see all she has accomplished.

She is a huge inspiration to me and has helped me start to reshape my bubble. If not for her, I wouldn't be taking the steps that I am now.

I can't let this 100th hub go by without giving out a few more thank you's. Nelle Hoxie has been a great inspiration and mentor in my online journey here at HubPages. The reshaped bubble

This culminates my reshaping the bubble hub. I have found a great place to hang my hat while I journey onward and forward in the online world of writing. The learning alone here is priceless.

I am venturing out more both day and night. And the biggest step of all is that I am taking the necessary steps to do what I have wanted to do my entire life. I have applied to college. I have wanted to be a nurse since I was a little girl. My poor cats and dolls all got treated when I was little and as of this writing the application is complete and I am just waiting to hear whether I have been accepted or not.

If you are living life in a bubble and it is one you created out of fear, know this it is perfectly fine to live that way but there is so much out there it is a shame to waste your life because of the fear you feel.

I hope you enjoyed my story and that I didn't bore you into never taking a chance on my writing again. All of you are special. Remember that and that I wish you all blessings in your life.

Increasing My Earning Potential

This is a hub I did that is a bit to personal for the way they are tightening up ship over there, so I am transferring it to my blog here.

Over the course of the last several months while I was recuperating, I've done several things: 1) I put my website to work for me, 2) I monetized my blog, and 3) I discovered drop shipping.

Why exactly am I telling you all of this? I cannot help myself. I'm so excited about this coming year and my potential for increasing my earnings that I just have to share it all with you.

How exactly did I do this?
The first step...

The first step for me was to evaluate what I had going, which was way too much. I needed to streamline things. What with two blogs, a website with a blog, HubPages with multiple accounts, selling on Amazon, and an Etsy shop, I needed to cut back. Over the course of the last year most of this has suffered either from my illness or the fact that I was over inundated. What I needed to do was figure out just what I wanted to keep and what I knew HAD to go for my own benefit. In doing this, I evaluated each thing to see where I was truly bringing in some of that well deserved bacon.
Second step...

I'm not totally finished with this step yet, but I'm working on it. The second step for me was to narrow it down. I cut out, or am going to cut out, one of the blogs, the selling on Amazon is costing me money, as is the Etsy shop. The other thing to go was my additional hub accounts. They seemed to be interfering with my main one.

How did I figure a way to still keep those items for sale?
Let's check out step three...

In step three of this process, I went looking and actually found exactly what I wanted. The search began when it became apparent that the major auction site everyone uses wouldn't work for me. Again, it would only fee me to death and that was not an option.

I looked and read and finally found a totally free site where I could set up my very own webstore. And, funny thing is the site is called WebStore.com. Yes, you heard me right it is FREE! I will explain more about it in my next article that covers the site and some super friends that I have already met there, but I love free and this is as free as it gets.
Step four...

This step was all about integration. I wanted my website, blog, and this webstore to all work together. In order to do that , the website had to have a major overhaul. It's been monetized, as has the blog there and on Blogger.

I did add an addition of an aStore to my blogger page. It was really easy to set up since I already have an affiliate account through hubpages set up. I need to get over there and add some more merchandise but that is just easy peasy as pie.
The last step...

Step five is all about promotion. I plan to use the two blogs I have to promote the webstore, as well as keeping the website fresh with new products. I have a Facebook page and use that to promote all that I do including writing here at hubpages. As my listings run out of time on Etsy, I will be moving those items to the store, and as for the items on Amazon that I sell, yes you guessed it those too are going into the store.
In conclusion...

Jeez, I sound like I'm arguing a case in front of the Grand Jury and in reality I am. I've found the perfect way to earn income online and all at no cost to me. Strange experiences and new friends

I've been out looking for a job and one of the restaurants in my area put an ad in the paper looking to hire for the front of the house. My daughter and I both have experience and both need a job so we went and put in the applications. I really wasn't expecting much, but Friday we go the call to come in for an interview on Saturday morning. I was ecstatic to say the least. I've been looking for almost three years with no call backs. Saturday, we were at the place at the bright and early time of 8:30 along with about 30 other people. We thought, okay, so they called everyone in, no biggy. Had to be the strangest interview experience I have ever had.

They had all of us sit in one room and they called us up one by one to introduce ourselves, tell a bit about us and then answer a few questions. Once they had been through everyone, they went off and talked amongst themselves for a bit and came back and got rid of everyone but about six people. Of these six people, I think only a couple had restaurant experience. So, strange.

Over the weekend though I did make a sale from my Webstore. The owner of the shop in the pictures to the right bought one of my items. Of course that led me to looking at his store. Wow! What a collection of comic books. I know there is a big market out there for these. If you are looking, you definitely need to check out Needsilver Collectibles. There are also some really cool vintage items such as stamps, cars, and sports cards just to name a few of the items that he has in stock.

I'm still on the hunt for a job and may have found the perfect one for me this morning. We have a little shop here in Newnan that sells collectibles and the like via a brick and mortar store and online. This morning when I woke up there was an ad on a local site we use to post help wanted ads and the like. I called them up and then went in and put in the application. I spent about an hour just browsing around the shop and speaking to the owners. They are a super pair. I loved the shop. I already sell online, so for me there won't be much of a learning curve to get to work listing their items on eBay and all. Wish me luck as this would be a great opportunity.

Always on the Hunt!

Since I started doing sales on the internet, I am always on the hunt to find a great deal. I recently told you about Webstore and you can view my listings there by clicking the flashing icon to the right. Today, though, I want to tell you about an new venue I found.

I went looking for a different venue to set up shop on and I found one that I am just as pleased with as I am Webstore. It is totally free just like the other one with a few differences. You only get 1000 items that are allowed to be posted and you have to verify your account through Paypal in order to accept direct payments. The fee for this though is small, only 2.00. Once you have this all taken care of it is just a matter of inputting your listings. The site was set up by eBayer's that felt the fees were a little over the top and is just getting going. So, if you are looking for another place to sell where you can establish a firm hold in the market place with your items, I suggest you check it out.

At Linda's Boutique on ziing, you are going to find an eclectic array of items for the home, bath and body, and jewelry plus a whole lot more. I'm offering a multiple item purchase discount of 10% plus free shipping on all my items there. You can click the image of at the right to get to this new shop for me. Of course, I'm going to keep the webstore so you can always find me there as well.

I'm not to sure that I will be keeping the Etsy shop once my listings run out in a few months. It does cost money over there to list your items plus they take a final valuation fee out of what you earn. My items there are very similar to what a lot of other people have, which makes it hard to compete in that market though mine are priced very reasonably.

In summation, free is good. If it is costing you money to list your items, look around and find a place you can sell for free. I wish you much success in your online ventures.

Advertising Online

Ok, now that you have your online stores all set up like the one you can click on via the banner at the left, what do you do?

You've got to get your name out there is what. How do you go about this? There are any number of ways, but the main thing is that you can't just sit around and wait for the people to come to you. You have to promote fiercely to be able to compete in today's online market.

Some of the things you can do is start blogging. Blogger is free to set up and after you play with it a little bit, it really is a breeze to navigate. Set up social networking pages on twitter, facebook, digg, and the like. Share often on these sites to keep your name up there in people's minds.

You are going to have to know a bit about copy and pasting code so that you can create links like the one to the right that takes you to my WebStore. Speaking of webstore, I have to tell you it is fabulous. Completely free and being the skeptic that I am, I was sure there was some hidden fee somewhere, but no. I've made a couple of sales there now and yes you do indeed keep all the money, well except for the small fee that PayPal took out to process the transaction. It is simply the best online auction site out there in my honest opinion.

Now, let's see so you have a few shops and you are marketing them like crazy. What else can you do to generate that almighty dollar? Get proactive on the social networking sites. Make friends who might be like minded in buying the things you have up for sale. Promo their stuff if you see that they are selling too. It's a great way to get your name out there and get more people to find and see your things.

Sheeny, over at Sheeny's Memorabilia turned me on to a little spot that lets you post your ads to generate traffic. She sells things from the past and is doing quite well with it. One person found her on a thread at RarityGuide.com and has already purchased several things from her because of it.

It really is all about getting that name out there. My other friend that made my day when she contacted me about a swap over at WebStore is great at the promotion end of things, too. KnR's Emporium can be found on sites like facebook, webidz, and of course WebStore.

It really is exciting to start your own online ventures and with a little knowledge and some help from friends you meet along the way, you will succeed. Remember the key is to promote, promote, promote. When you think you've done enough, promote some more. You never know when that one person will come along and see your item and as my friend at KnR's says, start digging in the couch for the loose change so they can purchase it before someone else does.

Books, books, and more books

The Newnan-Coweta Public Library is not only a place for checking out selections of current books. They have a wide variety of ongoing events during the year that will keep the whole family entertained as well as some gems about our local history. There is a video section, computers that you may use, children's area, teen's area, books in large print, paperback section, and books for sale. There is also a book club that has regular meetings.

On Thursday's during the month they host family night. Located just 3 miles outside of Newnan proper the library is a boone of activity. To see what they have in store in any given month please check out their website for more information.

While this is an exciting place to be, the real excitement comes in the fact that the city has refurbished the original Carnegie Library in downtown Newnan, GA. This building housed the library from 1904 to 1987 when the new library was opened outside of town. Not only is the a wonderful development for the community, but also a major milestone in the history of Carnegie Libraries. Most have either been destroyed over the years or converted to other uses. This is the first to be restored to its original intent and will make it the oldest library in Georgia.

The sign on the top of the building proclaims Newnan as the city of homes. It is purported that Sherman on his march to Savannah was planning to burn the city, but it was spared when he got sidetracked. We were very fortunate to have this happen as much of the homes of the era, the courthouse, and even the first hospital here all bear the signs of the age of civil war and add to the local charm of our city. Having the library reopened in this historic building is certainly a blessing.

One of the many things you will find in the library is a section on our local authors of which we have many. Some of the more famous ones are: Margaret Anne Barnes who wrote Murder in Coweta County, which was also made into a movie. Erskine Caldwell was another author from the area . Then, there is Lewis Grizzard. He wrote a humor column for the Atlanta Journal and several books.

There is one who is probably unknown at this point except for in the halls of history classes at several universities, but the one I am most proud of in the long run. My cousin David Evans wrote a book called Sherman's Horsemen. It is being used to teach the history of Sherman's march through Georgia in many a university history classroom.

These authors from Newnan, Georgia can be found at the library as well as many more. If you haven't visited it recently, please go by and see what is going on. Check out the plans for the Carnegie Library while you are there it will be a great addition to the library we already have.

2011 Begins with a Bang

I don't know about you all, but my 2011 started with a bang. Hehe...no, I don't mean fireworks, though if I had, had some on hand I would have shot them off. What, exactly, am I talking about then? I've been on WebStore now for a little over three weeks and New Year's Eve I got my first sale. Yep, I wasn't the only one out there cruising the listings that night. I'm excited to say the least.

WebStore is still a fairly new venue when it comes to auction style selling, but they are moving on up in the searches. Google is picking them up (yes, I had to check, lol). So, if you haven't checked them out lately, get your fanny a cup of joe and head on over by clicking my flashing link to the right or check out what the following seller's have to offer by clicking their picture.

Once Upon A Layout is a great little shop that offers chipboard embellishments for your scrapbooking needs. They are also super helpful on the forums to everyone.

Sal323 is a seller there that offers up an eclectic variety of merchandise. You can find almost anything in this shop from archery bows to purses. Always friendly in the forums, so check the store often to see that you don't miss out on new listings.

I have to say as an auction site, WebStore certainly makes just browsing a pleasurable experience. You can search by keyword, category, store name, and even user name if you know that. They have a swap option for listing your items, the forums where seller's and buyer's can come together to discuss online sales, and I have yet to meet a disgruntled person.

Signing up is easy and like I have said before, it's all free. I just love free! Everyone there is having a great time listing and shopping, so why not get out that Visa gift card and go find something you really wanted for Christmas and buy it.

New Friends at WebStore

As I said in my previous post, WebStore is simply an awesome venue if you are looking for an option to sell your wares without being nickel and dimed to death. They have put in place so many useful things that any seller could possibly want and all for free. You can now search for usernames, use a shipping calculator, or make use of the forums to learn even more about online listing. As a buyer, you just never know what you are going to find. Search the categories or just browse through the recently listed and items ending soonest sections from the main page.

I've only been on there a short while, but through the advent of the forums I have started making some great friends. Let me tell you about a few of their stores.

Sheeny's Memorabilia is a place to find all kinds of items that come from wherever the owner finds a deal and then that deal is passed on to you. The really interesting thing here is where the name of the shop is derived from~Sheeny: a peddler or street vendor, usually someone who bought and sold used articles, rags, or scrap metal.

In a sense, we are all junkies when it comes to looking for a bargain. If you are looking for some old time memorabilia, check out Sheeny's by clicking the shop logo here to the left.

The picture of the horse head bell will take you to another of my newest friends on WebStore. KnR's Emporium is a shop where you can find some awesome items in cast iron or the metal look. I'm rather partial to this kind of thing because I have frames, wall sconces, candle holders, and the like scattered around my house made from these materials.

The shop owner is fairly new to WebStore, but she gets a huge thumbs up from me as she is very active in the forums and always willing to lend a helping hand.

This next little shop isn't really so little. There are over a thousand items listed in this shop and as a new scrapbooker it is one of the first shops that I saved to my favorites.

The items are all first rate and at really awesome prices as well. Again, this one can be found in the forums passing on their knowledge of what has worked and not worked for them in creating their store. She, for me, is one of the go to people when I am having one of those days where I can't seem to find how to make something work on the site. If you are looking for an exceptional deal on your scrapbook supplies or just want some advice look her up by clicking her logo picture here to the left. I guarantee you won't be disappointed.

Now, I was going to leave you here with just my three newest finds at WebStore, but there is simply one other that I must mention.

BoxLotAuctionsAntique2New is one of the most giving members of WebStore. This member to me goes above the call of duty and generates the most genuine feedback and is extremely helpful in the forums. With an ever changing inventory supply, there is absolutely no telling what you might find in his store. I love just browsing through this shop. Some of the items really bring on that nostalgic feeling when I see something that I remember from my childhood and seeing in my Grandmother's house or playing with as a child. It's a great way to have a cup of coffee in the mornings. Check them out and see what memories they create for you.

Of course, money is tight but the economy is starting to turn around just a wee bit so if you didn't get that certain piece of jewelry for Christmas or you have a birthday, anniversary, or if like many you are already thinking about Valentine's Day, hop on over to WebStore where we all strive to make your shopping experience a pleasure.

WebStore and All It has to Offer

I recently discovered an alternative to listing and selling on eBay. The site I found many of you may already know about, but if you, like me, haven't discovered it yet you can read about their recent success here as to becoming the Number 2 auction site.

Honestly, I don't think there is a better site out there. Everything on this site is free, except for a small fee to verify your account through PayPal. This isn't a requirement to set up a storefront though. It just means you have taken an extra step to assure your customers that you are honest and reliable. Once that is done, you are on your way. Don't want to open a store, then simply list items as an individual. Now, here is the best part, you know how those other auction sites fee you to death with insertion fees and final valuation fees and well fees for just about everything, WebStore doesn't do any of that. You keep everything you make. That is right, they charge you nothing, zip, nada, that's right you keep it all. They have several ways to be paid and if you opt for the PayPal version then yes PayPal is going to take their fee, but other than that you keep it all.

Time to Start Thinking about Valentine's Day

I know, I know, Christmas isn't even here yet and I said the "V" word. Seriously, though, if you are an online shopper and want to get great deals and your merchandise before that day, you've got to start thinking about shopping now for Valentine's Day.

I don't really celebrate this day much anymore. I used to think it was important and too many it is, but for me it has always just kind of been another day. Since my surgery, I have a different outlook. I try to make each day a little better than the last. This year, I'll be buying for the two love birds who reside with me. It won't be much, funds are still really tight, but a little something just to let them know how much I care.

In gearing up for the shopping frenzy, I'm already searching out items that will be great to give to your loved ones for Valentine's Day. Just this morning, I posted a few new items to the Webstore like this great necklace set:

It is a really pretty silver heart necklace and matching heart dangle earrings. Not terribly expensive, really just the right thing for a new relationship or for the person you really aren't sure what to buy for them. Either way, she will enjoy it for years to come and the thoughts that came with it.

Christmas shopping this weekend is at a premium, as the stores are truly running out of merchandise to select from. Online shopping for that gift is past history as you can't get the items now by Christmas, but take advantage of the great deals people are still giving online and go ahead and make that Valentine's Day gift purchase.

10 days and counting

It is the 10 day countdown to that magical morning where the living room will be destroyed in 2.3 seconds.

I personally can't wait. I know there won't be much under the tree this year. It's been a lean one for all of us. For me though it has been a year filled with a second chance. The year started off on a sad note with my daughter and future son-in-law taking off across the country to start a new life in of all places Arizona. Sure the weather is better than here in Georgia, but dang it that was a whole six states away. Well, they made it! Mom and I went out to see them in early May and found out that they were coming home. I couldn't have been happier. I would have loved for things to work out for them, but in reality I missed my child badly. The hourly difference made it hard for us to connect, so they came home and have been living with me since June.

On the worst of it note, I still haven't found a job. I am really not sure when that will happen if ever. I've come to realize after being as sick as I was when they came back and then undergoing open heart surgery in mid-August that it really does take time to heal. I still have days where I can't find it in me to get out of bed, but I do. One must keep trudging along.

The next setback came when T had a rear-end collision while at work. This knocked him out of work for the better part of two months. Through much rehabilitation he seems to be doing much better though his back does still hurt him somewhat. On top of that, my daughter got pneumonia and mono all at the same time and lost her job because she can't afford to go back to the doctor to get a release. No insurance when you work for a daycare facility and they haven't been all that nice about her illness. So, she is looking for something new and venturing into online selling like I have been doing.

So this year I am very thankful and don't give a rat's patuuty what is under the tree. I just want to enjoy the morning with our little family. It will be fun, no doubt cause there is a few things under the tree thanks to another family member taking pity on me and my financial situation>>thanks dad, lol.

I've updated the blog here and added a link to the Basic Wicca page. I'll prob keep updating as I find things of interest to post about. I also added some stuff to my Webstore so please click the link to the right and check out the great deals I have going on right now. I'm working on a few more handmade projects for Christmas and then I'll be doing some more for my Etsy shop which is also at the right. It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas

In just 11 days or 7 if you celebrate Yule, the holiday of all holidays will be here. Are you ready?

I've still got a couple of things to make and take to my mom's holiday celebration this coming Sunday, but for the most part I am all done as I can be this year. It has been a whirlwind of activity around here what with opening an Etsy shop and getting all my things that were just chilling in a bin listed on there. Then, we discovered a way to open a webstore for free without using eBay. Both of which you can access via the links in the right hand margin.

I'm also listing on Amazon.com and up until a week or so ago I was doing a bit of freelance work. That kind of petered out with the holiday season and I'm hoping to pick something up again after they are over. My hubs had kind of come to a standstill with this flurry of activity, hopefully that will change in the next few weeks. I've got some great articles in mind, just haven't been able to get them out there yet.

If you aren't quite done shopping, there is still time to get things for Christmas via online or in the brick and mortar stores. I wouldn't push ordering online though much past the 17th for fear that the item might not get to you or your loved one in time.

Online Shopping with a Bit of Self-promotion

Those of you who shop online have been really good to me this year. For the ones who have online shops, I'm trying to raise awareness of your ventures and my own here through my blog.
Over the course of the last couple of weeks, things here at Che' Futral have changed. We have all become focused and diligent with our online pursuits. It probably won't make the impact that we would want this year, but it is laying the foundation for years to come. We wish everyone the best with their own endeavors. And, without further delay, here are my finds for today.

PinkyLee is working it hard this season to attract customers to her new venture of selling online. She lost her job recently in the daycare industry due to the fact that she came down with pneumonia and couldn't afford to go to the doctor to get a release to return to work. Never one to take adversity laying down, she shrugged and made a move into the world of online selling.

Her eBay store features many home decor items and collectibles and you can visit it by clicking on the awesome candle holder to the left.

If you are looking for some great hair accessories for your little one, click on the picture of the Korker bow to the right and it will take you to her Becky Boo's Designs page on Etsy. She has some wonderful Korker bows on there and a few select Breast Cancer Awareness items, too.

I've found a new home for my own assortment of treasures. By clicking on the bookstore to the left you can find an assortment of collectibles, home decor, new/used books at discounted prices and so much more.

The grid on the right side of my page will take you to my Etsy handmade crafts items, which also houses some extra supplies for the crafter that I am no longer in need of for my own personal use. You can find baby items, hair accessories, Pagan crafts, and clothing in my shop. I really try to make it a place where you can get quality items for just about anyone on your gift list. The other thing that I am doing is selling on eBay. Many of the items that are in my webstore can also be found on eBay. Got to diversify, because you can't have all your eggs in one basket. In an effort to bring you more shops that you can visit online, I'm addressing four shops that I visit often to see what is new. These ladies all work hard at their crafts and you can check them out by visiting the links below.

Willow Forrestall is a friend of mine on Facebook and since getting to know her, I have found that she has a great little shop online where you can get handmade items, custom items, and the like. You can get to her shop by clicking on her logo at the left.

MrsB's Brews and Baubles is a fun little Etsy shop where this friend from Facebook has some great little items. My current favorite is the VooDudes that she makes. They are these cute little dolls that kinda resemble a gingerbread man with a twist. She also has a lot of other items in her shop that she creates, so check her out by clicking on the image to the left.

Avebury Mystikals again is someone I ran across while on Facebook. I simply love the items that they have in their shop. On Facebook they run contests from time to time giving away some of the items. Simply a wonderful group to deal and shop with for handcrafted items to commercially produced ones.

This little shop called Becky Boo's Designs has some awesome quality crafted clips and hair bows for your little princess. Pagan Online Shopping

Since, I started the new feature yesterday of the book shop, and I mentioned online shopping, I thought I would continue in that realm today and give you a few of my favorite online Pagan shops to browse.

These shops are simply excellent for finding unusual or practical gifts for that certain person that is just hard to buy for on your list.

The first one is set up in a banner on the side of my page. Llewellyn is an awesome site that has calendars, clothing, books, articles to read and so much more. Check them out by clicking on the banner at the right.

The next one is Pagan Magic and not only do they have some of the best products at phenomenal prices, but they offer a free thirteen lesson course with a newsletter and study group. I found the course to be excellent in its detail and timing. It comes right to your inbox on a regular basis and there is nothing to do but read and practice.

13 Moons was my first foray into online shopping for Pagan items. They were simply great to deal with. The site is easy to traverse and they have a wide selection of items that can be given as gifts or simply bought for yourself. They also have a very wonderful newsletter that is delivered to your inbox that is chock full of information. One of my favorite spots on the site is to check out the clearance section. So, if you know someone who is Pagan and need a special gift for them, check out 13 Moons.

This last one is a great suggestion for anyone who is just starting out in the craft. At Magicka School they can join the forum, take free classes and shop in their store. They too have a newsletter, ezine and so much more.

This is just the first of a few places that I like to visit for purchases online of Pagan supplies and novelty gifts. Even if you aren't Pagan, check them out because I would bet that the array of jewelry on these sites can please someone in your life and if not that I bet you know someone who is into dragons, or Gothic type things.

When you visit any of these sites you simply cannot go wrong and they are all safe and user friendly so why not give them a try. And don't forget to check out my book shop as I've added two additions today, along with a new addition to my Etsy shop.

New Feature

As of today, I have added a new tab to the blog of a book shop. I will be listing my collection of new and slightly used books in this shop over the course of the next few weeks. Make sure that you check back often to see what has been added at severely discounted prices.

You can click on the gadget at the top of my page to get to my Etsy shop, where you will find new items that are hand-crafted by yours truly at reasonable prices. If there is an item in my shop that you like, but not in a color that you desire or pattern, please feel free to contact me with any questions. If you have suggestions for items that you would like to purchase, but cannot find, don't hesitate to mention this too.

Things here are going really well and I'm super excited about the upcoming Yule season. So far this year, I've been crafting like a fiend for my daughter. She is giving some great presents to her friends and family. After the holidays I will post pictures of some of the items so that you all can see them and if you like them request a custom order.

Cyber shop this year, the malls are packed as are places like Wal-mart. Just today, I heard about the unholy brawl that took place in a Wally World in my great state. Poor woman on crutches was trying to buy a towel. It was only a dollar, but apparently another woman had her eye on it and a knock down drag out fight ensued right there in the linen department. Avoid these hassles and support your favorite shops online this year.

Dealing with Customer Complaints

Recently, I set up a couple of accounts. One of them is on Etsy.com and the other is on Amazon.com. The Etsy shop is for all my handmade craft items and the Amazon one is for books that I have read or were given to me. With the advent of these two shops, it got me to thinking about customer service. Everything I have ever done has centered around customer service in some what or other.

How do you set yourself apart from the gagillion other customer service representatives out there? Is it your tech savvy? Or, is it your ability to deal with customer complaints and make your clients feel special?

Let's set the scene: You are giving the prospective clients your presentation and all throughout it they are interjecting comments and they are derogatory in nature. What do you do? Do you stop your presentation at every little comment to address each issue? No, just acknowledge that you heard them and move on.

Wikipedia defines an objection as this: An objection is an exclamation of disagreement or opposition.

Now, let's get back to the presentation - once you have finished with it go back. You want to make sure that they know you heard them.

Acknowledgment is a powerful tool if used in the right context. Use the feel, felt, found technique to let them know you heard what they had to say. Example: Mr. Buyer, I feel you are upset. I have felt that way myself on many occasions. However, what I have found is this...(you fill in the rest depending on what they are upset about).

You need to also make sure that you inject positive reinforcement. This will make them feel like you are taking their objection or complaint seriously (which you should be if you value them as a client). Example: I want you to know Mr. Buyer, I will do everything in my power to make sure that this does not happen again.

Again, reassure them that what they have said is important not only to them, but to you as well. Making a sad/glad statement here will help a lot in making Mr. Buyer feel you are getting what he has to say.

Ask the client what you can do to rectify the situation. You need to make sure that you are understanding if this little problem has the potential of becoming a huge deal breaker. Often clients may ask you for something you do not feel you can give. Let's say they want you to lower the price or give them a flat rate for your services. You must then work your way through explaining why you expect to be paid a certain amount. If your presentation is prepared properly, this shouldn't come up as they will be able to see they are getting a good value in you and your services.

Now that you have detected and reassured your clients, you must be willing to offer them some form of settlement. Customer service is a balancing act as many businesses base their production on their clients happiness. A good example of this happened last night when my daughter and I went shopping. She had picked up two notebooks and the price on the shelf where they were said one thing, but when they were rang up the price increased. She explained the situation to the manager and the manager gave her the lesser price. The manager was very apologetic and ensured that her store would have repeat business by using good customer service.

Getting good at calming the clients objections and dealing with their complaints is the best way to negotiate at the time of closing the sale. Do not compromise your standards and values to keep a client that won't give up. If what they are asking seems to be too much, go with your gut.

Success is in knowing that you have treated your clients complaints with the utmost respect. This in itself will set you apart from the other customer service representatives out there. Remember, the average satisfied customer tells three people about his experience, but the average dissatisfied customer gripes to eleven other people and if they blog about it, the numbers increase dramatically. Negative word of mouth advertising is a problem few if any in the business world can afford. Learn to stay calm and face your customers with respect.

Top Ten Gifts I'd Like to Receive

As the holiday season winds closer, I'm often asked what my top ten gift wish list would hold. I'm not much into material objects because to me it isn't what we have that is important but what we hold dear. So my list is somewhat different from the standard one of new boots or slippers. It isn't a list anyone can really satisfy either, just what I would truly want.

Therefore, here's my list of the top ten gifts I'd like to receive.

1. Time With My Family

Time doesn't stand still. Every day brings a plethora of duties you must fulfill in one way or another. I never feel that there is enough time in the day to take care of everything. It is for this very reason, that more time with my family tops the list of the top ten gifts I'd like to receive. No one person can give you this gift. You have to achieve it yourself. Think of all the ways you can do this by saying no to additional duties, re-organizing your time, or just whatever it takes to make it happen.

2. Health for My Family

Unfortunately, sickness has been a part of my life. Whether it has played a minor or major role, it has been an experience that I do not enjoy. Health for my family therefore would be a welcome respite from the day to day grind. I know that it can not be avoided, but a lull would be nice. Now that I'm on the road to recovery, I want everyone around me to feel good and healthy.

3. Rest

This coincides with the one above as I have found that rest is the key to keeping me healthy. "There is no rest for the weary" is a saying that brings to mind the overworked. You can be a stay at home worker or mother/father and feel the pinch of tiredness. A day of rest is special when it is given with love for the recipient.

4. Peace of Mind

We witness events through the world of all our electronic devices whether that be the internet, news on our phones, or the nightly news on TV. All of this negative energy can where a person down. It would be such a huge relief if we knew that our personal safety didn't have to be worried about, that our children would never fall prey to unspeakable crimes, and that our environment wasn't compromised with pollution.

5. Words of Gratitude

When you juggle so many things and you are so good at it that it looks effortless, it sometimes becomes a given to our family and friends and they take it for granted that things will get done. Two simple words, thank you, can mean so much even if the act you performed isn't anything but something you do day in and day out. It let's the juggler know you noticed what they did.

6. Energy of A Child

This one should be on everyone's list. The amount of energy a child has never ceases to amaze me. Sit and watch a child at play. They are a boundless bundle of energy that never stops until their eyes close for rest. If I could bottle some of that up, I'd use it very wisely.

7. The Return of My Old Body

I still have pictures of me pre-pregnancy. After two c-sections in fairly close proximity of very healthy babies years ago, it took its toll on my body. Add to that the multiple surgeries I've had for various different things and the scars look like a road map to the hospital. I would love to go back and start over. Wouldn't want to mess up karma though, so information on getting healthy, exercise strategies, or just simply a walk in the park with one of my family would be a great gift.

8. Financial Stability

I am not a materialistic person, so I'm not talking about being rich and living in a mansion here. I would just like for myself to be financially stable enough to never have to depend on anyone again. I'm working towards that now, but having again the peace of mind that comes with this would be a huge gift.

9. An Extra Set Of Hands

It never seems like I can finish a project before someone comes along and asks for something. Or I might be in the middle of typing up an article and someone needs my help. An extra set of hands on certain days would be a blessing.

10. The Perfect Hair Day Everyday

I have a tug of war relationship with my hair. Some days it is great, most days not so great. So, to have the perfect hair day everyday would be an awesome gift.

As you can see, none of the things on my list are really practical in the sense that someone else cannot give them to you, with the exception of words of gratitude and really even those cannot be given if they don't know how you feel. It is a list of someone who wants things to run a bit smoother in her life is all.

Breakfast on the Go

We all know that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. It is terribly easy to get into a rut with it, though. Eating the first thing you can grab, whether it is cereal, yogurt, or whatever, it is still a rut.

With all the choices out there, it is easy to change things up a bit and get out of your morning rut. Check out the tips below and then come back and let me know what you do to get out of your breakfast rut.

Easy breakfast ideas!

Speedy Cheesy Eggs

Using a microwave safe mug. Crack two eggs into it and beat with a fork. Place in microwave for 45 seconds -- stir once and then microwave for an additional 30 - 45 seconds until eggs are almost set. Sprinkle with cheese and let cool slightly.

Apple Oatmeal Sweetness

Peel and chop up an apple. Add it to a package of instant oatmeal. Microwave per package directions. Sprinkle with cinnamon sugar and serve.

Homemade Pigs in a Blanket

Buy some frozen sausage links and pancakes. Microwave the sausage link and pancake per package instructions. Roll the sausage into the pancake and serve with maple syrup or dijon honey mustard.

Monkey Dunkers

Break bananas into chunks. Dip in yogurt sweetened with a bit of maple syrup. Then dunk them into granola or other favorite cereals.

Cheesy Burrito

Spread a flour 12 inch tortilla with pizza sauce. Sprinkle it liberally with cheese either cheddar, or monteray jack and microwave for about 30 seconds until cheese is gooey. Cool and serve.

PB&J Waffle Sandwich

Toast two waffles. Spread one with peanut butter and the other with jelly. Put them together like you would a sandwich and run out the door.

the suggestions above will make an impact on your day. Starting the day with a healthy breakfast even if it is a quicky on the run is the key to having a productive day. Remember to keep it simple to save yourself some time and share with your loved ones. They get tired of eating the same thing day after day, too.

Looking for Recession Busters

We are all looking for ways to bust the recession. I've come up with a few tips and tricks that will help you from advice on extended warranties to clipping coupons.

If you try a few of these, you could be laughing all the way to the bank too.

Couponing
One of the biggest things I hate doing is clipping coupons and then what to do with the ones that I don't or can't use. Usually, they end up in the recycle bin with the rest of the paper, but I've found a few great ideas on how to use them.

1. Host a coupon swap -- the idea here is to get together with your friends and have them bring all their coupons. You then swap coupons around so everyone has coupons that they can use instead of a pile that goes in the trash or recycle bin.
2. Start a coupon train -- in this idea you take the coupons that you can't use and send them to a friend, she then takes the ones she can use and adds the ones from her stash that she can't and sends them on to the next person. You could create a list to send with it to create a sort of round robin thing so that you know you will get coupons back at some point.
3. Get the kids clipping -- make a game of this idea. Whoever finds the best coupons and saves you the most money at the store will get a percentage of the savings to spend how they want.
4. Girls night out -- gather one or two friends and swap your coupons and then go off to the store for a girls night out of shopping. No one likes to shop alone, so this can be a nice treat for all of you.

Here are three things that can add up to big savings and save the wasted money.

1. Warehouse shopping -- make sure you go with a list in hand and stay out of the aisles that include books and non-grocery related items like clothing. The warehouse is where you need to save money not spend on incidentals and don't forget your coupons. They will take them and many of them even have their own booklet of coupons so check it out.
2. Skip the extended warranty -- big ticket items usually last well past the extended warranty and only about 8% of people ever use the warranty. Instead, ask your credit card company if they offer extra coverage.
3. Medicines -- shop around for the best rate on medicine. Many pharmacies now have the $4 prescription plans onboard and if your prescription isn't on the list the pharmacist can usually recommend another brand that is.

A couple of extra hints: try finding coupon groups at mommysavers.com and stretcher.com for additional tips on couponing. Also, you can check out medtipster.com for information on what medicines fall under the $4 dollar plan and if yours isn't on it, you can sign up to be notified when it does get on the list.

Why God Made Sunshine

I remember growing up and dad would go to my grandmother's every Saturday to help on her farm. Saturday was wash day for my grandmother. She had an electric dryer, but even in the middle of winter she'd have her clothes strung out on a line that ran the length of her house in the side yard.

Finally, unable to stand it any longer, I asked her why she did that. I mean there was a perfectly good dryer in the house and no one would have to see her underwear if she'd just use it. Very patiently, as she stuck a clothes pin in a bra strap she said, "cause that's why God made the sunshine".

I mulled this over for a bit and then came to the realization that this was the reason her sheets always smelled so fresh.

Now, for me, I'm too dang lazy to dry my laundry this way, but I've never forgotten the way her clothes and those sheets smelled.

Teaching an Old Dog New Tricks

Grandma was always trying her hand at new things. We went to quilting bees' sometimes during the summers when I would visit for longer than a day. When she started crocheting at what I thought was an advanced age, I came to understand what she meant by the saying of teaching an old dog new tricks.

Since coming to understand that, I try to strive to learn something new each day. At the ripe old age of 42, I started teaching myself to crochet. Some times I love my creations, others I rip apart and start over, but I've mastered it, so you can teach an old dog a few new tricks.

Blackberry Cobbler Lost

How did we lose the blackberry cobbler? It's really quite simple. After years of picking blackberries and enjoying this dessert from my grandma and then she passed on, everyone who enjoyed this heavenly creation realized no one had her recipe.

We have tried to recreate it, but I think it had something to do with those wild blackberries we picked. The juice staining our fingers and clothes mixed with the love she poured into make them into a cobbler just can't be found in store bought ones. The blackberry cobbler is lost, but the memories of its creation lives on and on.

Realization Dawns

I realize now how precious our time together was and am glad I listened along the way. Sure wish I'd written down the cobbler recipe, but I do still have some great memories of that time. She was the reason I wanted to be a nurse. Her motto, cod liver oil doesn't taste so good, but it sure cures what ails ya.

I miss her terribly, but there are days I can still see her in her straw hat hoeing her garden. She was one of the good ones and a keeper.

Soups On!

Brrr...it's cold out. Here are some good ways to warm up!

Our weather turned unseasonably cold this past week. So, when the temps drop try one of these on for some added extra warmth.

Baked Potato Soup
1 Clove of garlic, minced
6 large baking potatoes, pierced with fork
4 1/2 C Chicken Broth
1/2 tsp pepper
1 lb. shredded cheddar cheese
1 pint half and half cream
2 C milk
Heat oven to 400 degrees. Wrap garlic in foil and place with potatoes in oven. Bake garlic 45 minutes. Continue to bake potatoes another 15 minutes or until soft in center.
Place chicken broth, pepper, half and half, cheese, and milk in a large dutch oven over medium heat. Add garlic to soup mixture when it comes out of the oven.
Remove potatoes from oven when done. Remove skin, cut into 1/2 inch pieces, and add to soup mixture.
Simmer for 15 minutes. Serve with grated cheese and bacon bits.

Hamburger Soup
1 lb. ground beef
1 large onion, chopped
1 Tbsp vegetable oil
1/4 tsp. oregano
1 1/2 tsp. salt
1/8 tsp. pepper
1 can condensed beef consume'
1 can diced tomatoes
1 can baby lima beans
1 can tomato puree'
Brown the ground beef and onion, drain well. Place all other ingredients except lima beans in a large dutch oven. Add ground beef and onion. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer covered for 15 minutes. Add beans and cook for an additional 15 minutes uncovered. Let simmer on low until you are ready to serve.
Serve with corn muffins.

Here's one you can give as a gift-in-a-jar for all your friends to enjoy, too.
Chicken Tortilla Soup Mix
1 Cup white or brown long-grain rice
1/2 Cup dried pinto beans
1/4 Cup dried chopped or minced onions
2 Tbls chicken boullion granules
2 tsp lemon pepper
1 tsp dried cilantro
1 tsp sugar
1/2 tsp garlic powder
1/2 tsp ground cumin
1/2 tsp salt
2 to 2 1/2 Cups crushed tortilla chips

Into a one quart sized wide mouth jar poor your rice. Into a ziploc type bag pour your pinto beans making sure to force out all the air. In a second ziploc type bag combine onions, boullion, lemon pepper, cilantro, sugar, garlic powder, cumin, and salt and again make sure you for all the air out before sealing. Once you have these bags done, place them inside the jar layered on top of the rice. Add in the crushed tortilla chips and seal the jar.

Most of these jars come with a really crummy looking lid. What I do is add a piece of fabric cut with my pinking shears to the top and hold it down with a rubber band. I then attach a piece of raffia or ribbon and slip a gift card with instructions for making the soup on it. I've also added this jar to a nice basket with a can of stewed tomatoes and green chili peppers to complete the recipe.

To make this into a delicious soup, you will need the following directions:
1 Jar Chicken Tortilla Soup Mix
10 Cups water
1 can (14 1/2 oz) Mexican styled stewed tomatoes
1 can (4 oz) diced green chilies
9 - 12 oz skinless boneless chicken breast
Shredded cheese, chopped cilantro, sliced black olives, and avocado

Once you have all the ingredients, empty the tortilla chips into a bowl and place them to the side. Remove the bags from the jar. Place beans from bag in a saucepan and add enough water to cover them. Bring to a boil on high heat. Reduce the heat and simmer with the lid on the pan for about 5 minutes. Turn the heat off and just let the beans sit for about an hour. After that drain them and move on to the next step.

Take your water, beans, tomatoes and chilies and place them in a large soup pot. Bring all this to a boil, then cover and simmer for about 30 minutes. Add in the chicken and remaining bag to the pot and cook for about 30 more minutes or until the chicken is done. Remove the chicken and cut into small pieces or shred it.

Next you will want to add the chicken back in and the rice from the jar. Cover the pot and cook for 20 minutes or until the rice is tender.

Once all this is complete, dish it up into your bowls and garnish with crushed tortilla shells, shredded cheese, the chopped cilantro, sliced black olives or the fresh avocado. We even add in a small dollop of sour cream sometimes.

If you are looking for just a nice warm cup of tea, you could try the following recipe. It is another option for the gift-in-a-jar for you to give during the holiday season.
Chai Tea Latte Mix

1 Cup powdered nondairy creamer, divided
2 Tbsp packed brown sugar
1/2 tsp ground allspice
1/2 tsp ground cardamom
3/4 Cup instant unsweetened tea
1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
1/2 tsp ground cloves
3 Tbsp nonfat dry milk
1/2 tsp ground ginger
1/4 Cup granulated sugar

The first thing you want to do is take 1/3 Cup of the creamer, brown sugar, cardamom and allspice and mix it together, then pour this into a wide mouth jar. Add in a 1/4 of the tea. Next you will combine 1/3 Cup of the creamer with the cinnamon, and cloves and add it to the jar. Again add in 1/4 Cup of the tea. Combine the rest of the creamer with the dry milk and ginger and add onto the layered ingredients in the jar. Top off the jar with the rest of the tea and the granulated sugar and then seal the jar.

Follow the instructions for decorating the jar lid from the tortilla soup mix recipe and you have a nice friendly tea to give to your friends.

To make the tea: Take 2 Tbsp of the tea mix after you have shaken the jar to combine all the ingredients and add to 1 Cup of warm milk. You can then add a 1/2 to 1 tsp of honey if desired and enjoy.

While you are enjoying one of these soups or this fabulous tea and getting all warm and cozy, I recommend you kick your feet up and snuggle by the fire.

Tips for Packing the Perfect Lunch

Everyone is trying to find ways to cut back on their expenses during these difficult times. One of the best ways I've found to do this is to pack a lunch. Seriously, you can really come up with some great things to put in your lunch satchel and I've got some really cool ways to make that lunch near perfect.

Keeping your lunch cool!

You've decided to start taking your lunch and foregoing the expensive deli. I say hurray! Only one thing is keeping you from making the total commitment. How to keep everything cool?

First, buy an insulated lunch container. They make some really good ones that aren't so small and can hold even a way to keep the items inside cool.

Secondly, don't buy the expensive ice packs. Most of them are bulky and you'll forget at some point to use them. Instead, put your bottled water in the freezer the night before and in the morning pull it out and put it in your lunch box.

Everything will stay fresh and by lunch time the water will be ready to sip.

No Mess Cupcakes

You made a batch of cupcakes and you'd really like to take one for lunch. Not a problem. I just cut the top off and invert it onto the bottom. The icing is now a filling and the cupcake can easily be wrapped up and put inside your lunch box to savor after your meal.

This is an excellent trick to use in the kids lunches, too.

The Message Board

Most of the insulated lunch boxes have a zippered lid. Add a piece of clear or white contact paper to the inside lid and you have an instant place to write yourself or the kids notes.

You can keep the kids informed on things like after school plans, your own afternoon meetings, or just friendly inspirational notes for the day.

Morning Rush No More

Over the weekend, go ahead and create your sandwiches for the week. In the mornings when you are pulling out your bottled water, grab a sandwich.

Most any kind of sandwich can be frozen, even peanut butter and jelly. Just zip them in a plastic bag or sandwich container and by lunch they will be thawed out and ready to eat.

A Note about Condiments

Condiments can be tricky. Most of them don't freeze too well. So, if you are going to be doing the weekend trick, make sure you start stocking up on condiment packages when you go to a fast food restaurant. Just throw in some extra mayo, ketchup, mustard, really whatever they have that you think you might need to pack with your lunch.

Don't forget to grab straws and utensil sets, too. Just don't over do it or the restaurant might not want you coming back.

Think up some fun and creative lunch ideas from turkey roll-ups to salad with fried chicken fingers for your lunch ideas. You could even check out some of the fast food places for a little inspiration but try not to spend your money with them.

Once you've gotten the hang of it, sit down and figure out what you were spending on lunch out vs. bringing your own and start putting that amount into a little savings jar or account for a rainy day or a little extra splurge money for vacation.

Procrastination Observation

Setting goals is the number one thing you are supposed to do right? What if you set them, then don't remember where you put them? Or, did you conveniently forget where they are?

I am great at making plans but it is the sticking to like glue I have a little trouble with. They tell me to push through the barriers. Keep on trucking so to speak but where am I going and what will I gain?

Oh those darn mentors want a weekly plan as well as a plan for the year. Heck I don't even know what I am having for dinner.

Then of course there is the daily plan. Well all this planning is great but I gotta tell ya for someone who is slightly ADD that much focus might just send me into the ionosphere.

Everyone tells me you have got to simplify your work. How the heck am I supposed to do that when I just found something new to try out that is just going to add to the load if I decide it is worth it?

Here is the one I love the best using a mobile planning system. Man I just learned how to embed a video, do you really think I am tech savvy enough to figure out a mobile device?

Progress is to be reviewed, but if you can't find the goals what are we reviewing?
Now here is one I can get with the plan on >>Learn to say no. No, is easy, it is getting everyone you have said yes to for so long to believe you.

Assistants can be a great asset, but if you can't find the plan, how are they to assist you?

Yes, these are all things we do every day of every year and it boils down to procrastination. I am now having to learn how to not procrastinate with running two business models out of my home. So, pick it up and turn it around. Kick some butt and take some names. Or just get 'er done!

A little history about GA and me!

I had to do some figuring for this one as my addled brain couldn't remember which came first but after a call to my mother I got it straight. Growing up in Georgia there were and still are many opportunities to see live music. However, when you are only around the age of 11 and your parents don't promote such happenings as a concert you might not get the chance. I did get the chance but only because my mother wanted to see these two artist perform together and dad lovingly bought tickets for the event. Nothing fancy just a concert at what was once the premier spot in Atlanta for such things.

The Omni was the place and the event...well as you guessed because of my age I had to go. My sister lucked out being 6 years older than me and working she couldn't but well she had been to a couple of concerts and to an 11 year old it was something new, a way to find out what all the hype was about, and a chance to see two famous country stars perform.So, while I really didn't care about the performance it was pretty cool to see The Omni, visit downtown Atlanta, and eat at the Varsity all in one day. Ok, I know I need to tell you the shame of it...I just, well oh ok here it is two legends in our own time...Dottie West and Kenny Rogers

My best friend and I got the chance for our first officially unchaperoned concert. The Bay City Roller's, OMG. Can you believe it. She of course had her fav as did I. Ann's mother drove us down to the Fox Theater in Atlanta, parked the car about a block away and walked us to the front doors. She took up residence at a tiny cafe across the street for the next two hours. Luckily for me this would not be the end of live music.

I have seen some incredible shows at many of the venues around our wonderful state. I have had the chance to meet several country music stars during this time and I have never nor will I ever give up the opportunity to see a concert live.

I also took my kids to see Cher on her farewell tour when she came to Atlanta in 1999. Cindi Lauper opened for her and it was a memorable night. Somehow about this same time I managed to get out of an NSync concert that my daughter wanted to see. I bought the tickets but a friend of mine took her along with her oldest daughter to see this one. LOL

The two most recent events I have attended were Reba when she was here at Chastain in June of 2007. My daughter gave me my ticket for my birthday and I gave her a ticket for her birthday. It was a wonderful live event.

The other event was at The Tabernacle in Atlanta. This was an experience for sure. I won tickets to this concert and had a front row standing seat to see Daughtry. The show didn't start until well after midnight but it was well worth the wait. Again, my daughter attended with me and it will be one of the nights she remembers for a lifetime.She has gained my appreciation for live music and while at the Country Fair concert three years ago called me from her cell phone so that I could hear Big and Rich. It brought tears to my eyes that she was thinking about me while she was enjoying this great live performance.

The weather is perfect for a little adventure here in Moreland, Geogia. This is the home of the Newnan-Coweta Airport. What was once a small time airport that housed single engine and a few twin engine planes has expanded and is now home to some small jets.

Alan Jackson (the country singer) flies his in regularly to see Mama Ruth. Local businesses are using it to bring in clients that want to skip the hectic pace of Atlanta's large airport. But that is not what I want to talk about today.

Today is about adventure and for a small fee you can have this one and it is a blast. You see the airport offers rides in their single engine planes. Kids love this as a special birthday trip. I personally have a friend who houses his plane here at the airport. First time was a doosy as he had just finished his pilots training and it was one of the first solo flights he had taken. We went over my house, over several other areas of the county, then out over West Point Lake where he decided it was a good time to practice some stall technique. I was not amused but it was a great time.

Located just 6 miles south of Newnan this little airport is a special find for all ages. In the late spring they will host their annual air show. Vendors will be set up to sell their wares and you can see all sorts of planes from the twin engine to old fighter planes to Red Baron styled planes.

If you are up for the time they had head on down to the airport and see about setting up a time to go up, up, up in the air.

What is Our Time Worth?

I had a special order for one of my bags recently that went the way the wind blows and this got me to thinking. I know that we all have busy days but what about the days that we just make ourselves appear busy.

In any given day there are 86,400 seconds that we get deposited in our bank. We start each day fresh with this deposit. Now, imagine if your bank deposited that kinda change in your account every day. What would you do? Me, I for one would be using every bit of it I could since I know it is not going to carry over to the next day.

Flexibility in our business is crucial. But, what if you have this perfect day planned with what you are going to get done down to the millisecond? How do you handle it when something, say an appointment gets pushed to later in the day?

I started planning my day last night with a new look on how it should go. I don't eat breakfast most of the time until later in the morning so that is something that I want to change. Next on the agenda is I checked my emails, visit a few forums I belong to, check Facebook and post here and there before I am ready to face the day. My time is worth a lot. When you spend a good portion taking care of a special order instead of building stock for a flea market day, then the client bails on you, what do you do? Did I FREAK-OUT? Admittedly, yes just a bit. Thoughts of how am I going to recoup the money I spent getting this bag ready spun through my head. I ranted and raved inwardly until I had worked up a pretty good amount of stress. The moment it broke for me was as I was sitting here last night reading a book.

Time is a precious commodity that we all tend to waste. I ask you to remember this precious gift when you hire someone to do a service for you. I ask you to realize the value of it. If you don't know what it's value is ask a student who failed a grade what one year means to them, ask a mother who gave birth to a premature baby what one month means to her, ask the editor of the paper what a week means to him, ask lovers who are waiting to meet what one hour means to them, ask a person who missed a train what one minute means to them, ask the person who just avoided a deadly crash what one second means to him, or ask the person who won the Olympic silver medal what one millisecond meant to them.

Value every moment you have. Count it as a gift. Treasure it by sharing it with someone special. Remember that time waits for no one. Yesterday is history. Tomorrow is a mystery. Today is a gift. Invest in today so that you get the utmost from it for your health, happiness, and success.
Enjoy today! If tomorrow never comes, be satisfied that you spent each and every moment you had to your own fulfillment. Don't waste a moment of your time or anyone else's. It is something we can never retrieve.

The Power of Three

Do you believe in Karma? I do. The power of three is steeped in mystery but I believe it is a force to be reckoned with in our lives.

What is the power of three? What you send out will visit back upon you three fold. It is simple really. If you wish ill upon others, it will come back to you three times worse than the way you sent it out. If you wish only good will upon others, again you will receive those wishes back in triplicate.

I know people that have crossed my path that cannot for whatever reason let things go. They hold on to their anger like a talisman. It consumes their life to the point that whoever crosses their path is affected by it in some way.

Negativity will eat you alive from the inside out and will destroy all that you come in contact with in your life.

Learn to be happy. Accept what is. Sprinkle fairy dust on those you love. Life is too short to be consumed by anger and negative energy.

Today, instead of being angry and taking it out on the world around you, light a candle and let that energy go. You will be amazed at how much better life can be when you get rid of the negative energy that flows through you. The day will seem brighter, the air will smell fresher, and those you love will feel freer to love you for who you truly are -- a person created to love and be loved.

I send out my light and love today to all the people who need help. Positive reaction = Positive action.

The Claddagh Ring

The Claddagh's distinctive design features two hands clasping a heart, and usually surmounted by a crown. The elements of this symbol are often said to correspond to the qualities of love (the heart), friendship (the hands), and loyalty (the crown). The expression which was associated with these symbols in the giving of the ring was: "With my hands I give you my heart, and crown it with my love." Yet, the expression, "Let love and friendship reign forever" can be found as another meaning for the symbols.

The way that a Claddagh ring is worn on the hand is usually intended to convey the wearer's romantic availability, or lack thereof. Traditionally, if the ring is on the right hand with the heart pointing outward and away from the body, this indicates that the person wearing the ring is not in any serious relationship, and may in fact be single and looking for a relationship. When worn on the right hand but with the heart pointing inward toward the body, this indicates the person wearing the ring is in a relationship, or that "someone has captured their heart." A Claddagh worn on the left hand ring finger, pointing outward away from the body, generally indicates that the wearer is engaged. When the ring is on the left hand ring finger and pointing inward toward the body, it generally means that the person wearing the ring is married.

Mine is more like this and I wear in on the thumb of my left hand with the heart pointing inward. I am not in a relationship nor am I looking for one at this time. I have seen many versions of this ring and thought you all would like a look at its traditional roots.

Ghost Stories in Georgia

Everyone loves a great ghost story. Told to perfection these stories can raise goose bumps and the hair on the back of your neck. The perfet ambiance of a glowing fire or flashlight-lit faces might even raise your blood pressure!

The South has its share of paranormal legends. Let's take a trip and see what we can find.

Doc Holliday at The Holliday-Dorsey-Fife house in Fayetteville, GA:

Many people don't realize that the famous gunslinger was a Georgia boy. What makes this story unique is the fact that in January of 1873 after just three months practicing dentistry in Griffin, GA he closed up shop, sold the building and most of his belongings and moved to Texas. Legend has it his cousin Mattie broke his heart, which led to a life of drinking, gambling, and gun fighting in the old west. It is said that his apparition can be seen at the Holliday-Dorsey-Fife house.

Carrolton Target Store:

In 1997 during the construction of the Carrollton Target store, a man fleeing police attempted to elude capture by climbing the steel beams of the skeletal structure. He fell to his death during the chase. Unusual chills, sounds of falling objects and running footsteps, and even the odd odors have all been reported since his tragic death.

Mayhayley Lancaster's Grave:

Reported to be one of the most famous psychics in GA, due mostly to her participation in the murder trial of John Wallace, she died in 1955. Ghost chasers and history buffs like to make her grave a stop when visiting the South. Beware! It is said that a teen after showing off for some friends by defiling her headstone, died in a terrible car crash.

Cedar Creek Bridge in Newnan:

This bridge is between Newnan and Roscoe. The story behind it is a sad one. In 1930, a woman and her infant died in a car crash on the bridge. It is reported to this day that people see a ghost car, hear a woman's terrified screams and the temperature fluctuates at night.

Bonnie Castle Bed & Breakfast, Grantville, GA:

Built in 1896, sightings of Mary Colley have been confirmed by various paranormal experts.

While these are just a few stories to pass along, there are many more. Local libraries have books on the topic if you are interested in researching this further.

How to bust the burn out syndrome

If you work from the office or home office, it is essential that you find a balance to avoid burn-out. How do you do this without slacking on your work or working long hours into the night? Creating good work habits that keep you well organized and have you efficiently finishing each project you tackle is the key.

The first step is to gain control over your work environment. You need to set up a good day planning system with checks and balances to keep you on schedule. Whether you work in an office or at home, you need to control external forces as well. Phone calls from buddies wanting to get together for drinks or friends dropping by the home while you are trying to finish that proposal are not only distracting, but they cut into your time. Keep these to a minimum if you can't cut them out completely.

Stressing over a deadline can take its toll on your work. Stressing over a deadline and how you are going to make the PTA committee meeting will only make it worse. Learn to cut back on what you say yes to outside of your work. Prioritize what is most important to you, being a coach on little Johnny's soccer team or little Johnny knowing you are at the game.

Get rid of the post-it note. Post-it would cringe to hear that, but looking for a note jotted on a post-it can cut into precious time. Make notes in your day planner to keep them organized and from getting lost.

Set a time limit and push everything you have into that set time. When the end of the time is up, look at what you have accomplished and then take a break. You can't sit at your desk and computer all day without these little mini-breaks. Your back and eyes will thank you and your work when you get back to it will be that much better.

Limiting what you tackle for your job will help to balance the load. If a project is beyond your scope, don't accept it. You will only stress yourself out and the work will not be up to your standard.

Balance is all about creating an even load on each side of the spectrum. Working late into the night to meet a deadline can be avoided if you follow a few of these steps and identify your procrastination triggers. Procrastination triggers? What are procrastination triggers? These are the little time wasting things each of us does when we are overwhelmed by a deadline.

How many times do you get up and refill your coffee cup? Does solitaire pop up in your most visited sites? Are there other things you do to avoid working that are keeping you at the office into the late hours of the night. In order to identify how much time you are wasting on these procrastination triggers, keep a diary of every time you walk away from your desk for a week. Write down what you did and how long you did it for so that you can then add up the total to see how many hours you lost. You might be surprised to find that you had an extra two hours each day to finish instead of staying at the office two hours later.

Your significant other and family might be surprised when you come home on time, but the new and improved relaxed person you will become will be greatly appreciated. Your other half will benefit by this new person, your children will enjoy their time with you more, but above all you will be free of the syndrome of working late into the night. Your stress level will go down and you will finally be able to enjoy a little down time.

Help your kids adjust to going back to school

As the lazy days of sleeping in and playing video games come to a close for the summer. Children around the world are starting to prepare for the beginning of a new school year. As parents, it is our duty to prepare our children to transition back into the routine of school. What is the best way to do that for your child? It depends on the child and their habits. If you have a late riser, you are going to have to get them back in the routine of getting up early. The best way to do this is to set the alarm and start the routine about two weeks before school starts.

Start them off by getting them in the routine of getting up and getting their things in order for the day. Start making sure they have a nutritionally balanced meal heavy on protein as opposed to one ladened with sugar. You will want to start this approximately fourteen days prior to the beginning of the new year.

Go over any changes in the way they will get to and from school. It might be the first year your child has had to ride a bus. Know when and where to expect the bus to pick up and drop off your child. It can get confusing. Make sure you have the right bus number. It will help to alleviate confusion.

Children who are entering a new grade level that requires them to go to a new school might feel a certain amount of apprehension about the coming school year. Which friends will be at the new school? Where is the lunchroom, the library and bathrooms? Go with your child on registration day. Walk the entire school and if possible get a map of the school. Visit their classroom with them and meet their teacher. Hang out and let the child see who else comes in so they can see if any of their friends are on the roll.

Make sure you have a list of supplies that they will need. Don't wait until the night before school to do your shopping for these supplies. Waiting until the last minute might have you slinging whatever the stores still have in stock into your buggy. You want your child to feel confident on their first day back with the right supplies and a cool new book bag if it is in the budget. Shop early.

Clothing is another consideration here. With smaller children it isn't quite as important to have the name brand items of their friends as much as comfort is a necessity. Older children will feel better if they have a few items which are name brand that they can show off. Shop thrift stores and consignment shops for these to cut your costs and make your child happy.

Setting up a routine prior to going back to school, making sure they know where they are supposed to be, and having them prepared with clothing and supplies will ensure they are ready to step out in style and confidence for the upcoming school year.

My last post got me to thinking about some vacations that I would like to take over the course of the next few years. The one that stands out the most is I would love to do the City Slicker thing and visit a dude ranch.
